I don't think they exclude each other. I mean all big poker players started out by playing small stakes or smaller buy in tournaments and had some big scores that allowed them to move up in stakes. Play bigger cash games and bigger tournaments. So grinding out small stakes is a learning opportunity until you have a bigger score and afford to buy into bigger tournaments. That's the way I see it.

I think that if you average a 100$ profit / day , you can have a decent lifestyle in any country of the world.
It depends on each individual, how you get there.
-you can either steal one BB at 50/100 NL
-you can either triple up in a 50$ spin and go , or double up in a 100$ spin and go
- or you might want to win 50 micro tournaments or 10 medium tournaments in one year

You can also finish in top 5 at a WSOP event like Danny is suggesting , and win once every 5-10 years !

Whatever route you choose, you must be disciplined.

I prefer consistent wins - less stress! What do you choose: steady grind or big score hunting?
It would be nice if the victories coincided with our wishes.Damn, that's not happening.

Good morning everyone,
I’ve been playing poker since 2018, and to this day I still haven’t gotten used to taking big losses, even though I understand a bit about variance. I prefer to make small but consistent profits, as I believe a downswing would greatly affect the way I play.

I see excellent players on Twitch who have accumulated losses of over $42K this year. You really need a strong mindset for that not to affect your game. I think dealing with big losses is one of the hardest things in poker, and even top players struggle with it.

For example, I saw a great player who has already made millions from poker play an 80bb pot with J9♦♦ in a 6-max MTT. He opened from MP with J9s, the villain (with 75bb) called from the big blind.
Flop: 9♣ 2♣ 5♠ — he thought the villain might have flush draws and made a 60% c-bet. The villain check-raised, and he called.
Turn: 5♦ — he bet 50% of the pot, and the villain shoved all-in; he called.
Villain showed A9♠♠.
I believe that if he had been up in profit, he probably wouldn’t have opened that hand from early position, nor played an 80bb pot with J9♦♦, holding only top pair with a jack kicker.

Small but steady, that means that big wins will come sooner than later.

Consistent good results as IMO with playing decent poker/ constantly improving your game, a few 'big scores' will eventually come too...

Did you know that one of the winningest online MTT legends, girafganger7 (aka Bert Stevens) was -$400,000 in the year 2023 prior to winning the biggest online score in History ($2,738,432.00 GGPoker WSOP MainEvent 2023 1st) AND prior to that big score he'd been on a $1 Million downswing!
BUT also prior to that, he was one of the biggest online MTT winners on pokerstars where he had a profit of $2.87 million (over 52,700 mtt's played with an average buyin of $193).
Often we don't hear about this sort of thing and many just think some players get lucky once in awhile but they don't understand that some of these players have played literally 10's of thousands of tournaments and have done so against some of the best players in the World. Even the best can have some big downswings. (not sure if C. Darwin has any big downswings... or Pads... or Lena... )

and at this point in my life today, I'd prefer to luckbox a satellite win for a big ticket and then fluke out and bink that (ie. like The Venom, or something big on GG... but I'd be happy with winning the $150 GG Weekly tournament

For me, total volume matters. If "huge" lets say, once per year is bigger than steady "small" monthly income x12 months, I'd go for "huge".
Pressuming they are equal, I'd prefer steady small.

For motivation, of course, it is better to consistently make profits. Better to cash in 50 out of 100 tournaments than just once out of 100. In any case, win in a way that the bankroll grows; that is the most motivating and gives you joy in the game. If you constantly lose due to many suckouts or hands where you are always the favorite but still lose, it can be very frustrating and sometimes take away your desire to play.
