As&nbsp;<strong>five cards are shared<\/strong>&nbsp;between all players (the \u2018community cards\u2019 or \u2018the board\u2019), everyone has some idea of what the other players may have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Need a reminder of what beats what? Just check out our guide to all the different&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/poker.casino.us\/strategy\/poker-hands\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/poker.casino.us\/strategy\/poker-hands\/\">poker hands<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the basics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Texas Hold&#8217;em uses a&nbsp;<strong>standard deck&nbsp;<\/strong>of 52 playing cards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each player is dealt&nbsp;<strong>two cards<\/strong>, one at a time, face down. These are known as &#8216;hole cards&#8217;, &#8216;down cards&#8217;, or &#8216;pocket cards&#8217;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is an initial betting round. Three community cards are then dealt in the middle of the table, face up. These are known collectively as&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;the flop&#8217;<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>all players may use these cards&nbsp;<\/strong>to make their best five-card hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is followed by the second round of betting. A fourth community card is then dealt face up. Known as&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;the turn&#8217;<\/strong>, this is followed by a third betting round.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A fifth and final community card is dealt, known as&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;the river&#8217;<\/strong>. The final round of betting follows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The pot is awarded to the player who has the&nbsp;<strong>best five-card poker hand<\/strong>, or to the&nbsp;<strong>last player remaining&nbsp;<\/strong>who hasn\u2019t folded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Players may use any combination of community cards and their own hole cards to make the strongest hand, as illustrated in our guide to poker hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-group section has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group section__content has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading section__heading\">How Betting Works in Texas Hold\u2019em<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost all poker games feature betting rounds and they tend to all follow the same patterns, so these rules can be applied to most poker games you\u2019ll come across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Betting moves&nbsp;<strong>clockwise&nbsp;<\/strong>around the table, usually starting with the player to the left of the \u2018Dealer\u2019 button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there is no bet to call, players may&nbsp;<strong>\u2018check\u2019&nbsp;<\/strong>(i.e. bet nothing) or bet any amount of chips they wish (as long as it is more than a big blind \u2013 see below).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a bet has been made, players may&nbsp;<strong>\u2018fold\u2019&nbsp;<\/strong>(discard their hand and wait for the next deal),&nbsp;<strong>\u2018call\u2019&nbsp;<\/strong>(match the amount of chips that have been wagered), or&nbsp;<strong>\u2018raise\u2019&nbsp;<\/strong>(increase the size of the bet, which any original bettors or callers would then have to call).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If any chips have been bet, all players must match that amount of chips (or &#8216;call&#8217;) to stay in the hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a player doesn\u2019t have enough chips to call a bet, they may instead put in all their remaining chips (although they will only be eligible to win that amount of chips from each player).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A raise must be at least equal to the amount originally bet, so to raise a bet of $5 you must raise it by at least another $5.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Texas Hold\u2019em is mostly played as a&nbsp;<strong>no-limit&nbsp;<\/strong>game, which means any player can bet all they have when it is their turn to act. It also means the next player is already facing a bet, and so must either&nbsp;<strong>call, raise or fold<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 no staying in for free!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a player raises in this first betting round, all other players must match their bet.
