Live poker relies a lot on physical tells, timing, and body language. But online, everything is different.
So what do you think: are online reads just as important as live reads, or is the game more “pure” online?I feel like timing, bet sizing, and patterns can reveal just as much online as physical tells do live.
Interested to hear how others see it.

What do you mean when you say reveal? To a player or, namely, the strength of a hand against an opponent

If they are important
Live Reads(physical tells + betting patterns are critical): body language, facial reactions, trembling hands, breathing, posture
Online Reads(timing, stats, and behavioral frequencies matter most): quick decisions vs. slow decisions, Consistency in thinking time, How often they continuation-bet, How often they bluff

Not really the same, but still important. Online reads = timing, bet sizing, patterns, chat behavior. Live reads = body language, eye movement, posture, tells. At high stakes, online timing tells and bet patterns can be just as powerful as live tells, sometimes even more consistent. Live reads add extra info, but don’t overvalue them—many regs crush live games relying mostly on fundamentals. Online = numbers and patterns. Live = numbers + human tells. Both matter, but the edge comes from combining info, not relying on one type.

This is a personal question for everyone. For me, online poker is better because my facial expressions will give me away😀

I think bet sizing and paterns are important but not timing couse sometimes it just depends on the internet conection. And often players just take their time when they are about to act - even if they are about to fold preflop first to act :)

Every aspect of the game is important, but obviously not so important to read the player's time and other factors. However, it is still relevant. If you're in doubt, you can experiment with instant plays and see how your opponent's game changes, especially in real money games.

I think online and live have different “reads”, but equally important , but in completely different formats. On live you read people ; on online you read patterns . And both can be just as strong.

In online poker, the value of “digital tells” is enormous:

  • Action time delivers trust, doubt, or automation.
  • Repetitive bet sizings reveal strength, bluff, or insecurity.
  • Patterns of aggression expose those who know what they are doing and those who are just clicking.
  • Defense frequency shows whether the villain understands ranges.
  • Reaction to pressure in specific spots reports leaks that never change.
That's why I wouldn't say that online is more “pure”. In fact, it's more technical , because all information comes from strategic behavior — not body language.

And the interesting detail is that:
👉 Online players tend to have more accurate long-term reads, because they're based on data and consistency, not on momentary impressions.

While on live, a tell may be wrong; online, a pattern that is hardly repeated.

So, at the end of the day, for me online reads are as important as live , but they require another type of observation and another way of interpreting the opponent.

But I want to see other opinions too, because this debate pays off a lot!
