I played $1/$3 for five hours Monday at the Portsmouth Rivers Casino. I bought in for $200 and cashed out for $298.
When I woke up this morning, it dawned on me that in five hours of steady play (I never took a break), I never once had a hand better than two pair. The dealers probably averaged 25-30 hands per hour, so that means out of 125-150 hands, I never had better than two pair. What are the odds of that?
I never hit a set out of the 10 or so pocket pairs I had. I had pocket Kings once and pocket Jacks twice and managed to win all three times. One of the jacks went to a showdown when I got jammed on pre-flop by a guy with pocket 8s. I won about $320 in that pot, which was my largest win of the day. The second time I had Jacks I 3-bet to $50 and everyone folded. When I got pocket Kings, I opened to $20 and got two callers. I bet $50 on a rainbow Q-8-3 flop and got one caller. I bet $100 on the turn and he folded. My biggest win came with A-K when the flop was A-K-7 rainbow. I jammed on the 8 turn, and a guy called me with K-8.
I got a steady diet of junk and a lot of J-9 and 8-9 suited, which I never connected with. A couple of times I hit a jack on a rainbow flop to give me top set with bad kicker, but won at least twice when everyone folded to my flop bet. Otherwise it was just a boring session.
