(Hyper)Turbo poker tournaments?

Hi everyone!

As a new player I'm looking to reduce the amount of real money I'll lose before getting good at the game. I wanted to get a better view on this topic because this is mostly what you will find as open freerolls in most websites and play money tables feel like a mad house, with very little to no learning value.

What is your take on using these kind of tournaments as a learning tool? You start with 10BB or so and the blinds raise every 2 mins, which compells you to play a lot of hands to try to survive and I feel like luck influcences these games a lot. I know I could be learning a lot about aggro play in them but most of the time it feels like such a rush that I can barely pay attention to the cards or think through what the opponents might be holding, so it kind of misses the learning point.

I can tell you that they teach you to be patient and selective with the cards in hand, these tournaments are initially push or fold, then if you have a considerable stack in play (100BB or more) you can play more calmly since the crazy people who bet everything at once are eliminated against the good players. Hold on and if you have bad streaks it's okay, learn, analyze, and act.

It's a lottery and the only experience you can get out of it is that it's not worth playing hyper and turbo tournaments.

I think if you're looking at a learning situation as far as thinking through hands and reading players look for small buyin games or cash tables, a hyper structure tournament for the most part is going to be about aggression, position and starting hand selection until much later in the game when it does approach more "normal" play👍

Playing freerolls is a great way to adapt to the pace of tournaments and build a bankroll for playing micro limit.

During a freeroll, to play with a stack of 10BB you have to push or fold only that is to say that you have to avoid calling the blind or raising a few blinds.

To apply this strategy, the best way is to follow the Nash chart, it will allow you to make the best possible decisions.

If you don't want to spend your own money, just play freerolls. Freerolls will allow you to understand the basics of the game, gain the necessary skills and experience. In addition, thanks to freerolls, you can increase your bankroll.

I would say you would learn more playing regular speed tables - a higher variety of play

you are learning push/fold efficiently but thats such a small aspect of the overall game of poker

you must take it easy when playing these tournaments, as they are very fast, players tend to play with whatever high card they hold, because the tournament requires you to keep in action, or get knocked out by the blinds, so the right thing is to play if you have a comfortable bankroll or if it's a healthy freeroll, which has a chance to increase your bankroll significantly, play with the objective of increasing your chips, with good hands and aggressive.
