Lately, I’ve been thinking — poker isn’t just about money, math, or EV. It’s a mirror. 🎭

When you’re sitting at the table, under pressure, every decision shows who you really are.
Do you fold too often because you’re afraid to lose?
Do you bluff too much because you crave control?
Do you tilt when bad luck hits, or stay calm and focused?

I’ve realized poker teaches more about emotions, discipline, and patience than almost anything else in life. It’s not just a game — it’s a test of character. 💪

Some people play to escape, others play to compete, and a few play to grow.
I think the best players do all three — they use poker as a tool to understand their own mind.

💬 So I’m curious — what about you?
Do you play poker mainly for profit, for passion, or for personal growth?
And has the game ever changed how you see yourself?

That’s a great perspective. I totally agree that poker is much more than just a money game. For me, it started as a way to make a living, but over time it’s become something deeper. The game constantly tests how disciplined and self-aware I am. Every bad beat or tough fold forces me to look at how I react under pressure and I’ve learned a lot about my own mindset through that.

At the same time, the financial side keeps me grounded and focused, it reminds me that emotions can’t get in the way of good decisions. So I’d say it’s both: poker is my profession and my teacher. It challenges me to stay sharp, humble, and patient, not just at the tables, but in life too.

I've been playing for over 57 years. There's no money factor, only passion. I like to call to see the flop, test my opponent's bets, and if I lose, I move on to the next tournament. I don't dwell on defeat, I don't like to think or act with revenge, and I don't use throwing cards, figurines, or any other actions.
For me, poker is a relief from problems, a wonderful stimulus for the brain, and a retreat from the outside world.

Going to therapy would probably be cheaper in the long run ;)
Poker is hard enough without adding any additional mental load from unnecessary analysis.

In reality it's to make money, but you have to understand that you don't always win, as they say that there are good streaks and bad streaks.

Money is the main goal, everything else follows by itself.

For me, it’s a mix of both. I play poker to win money, of course, but I’ve realized the game also teaches a lot about discipline, patience, and emotional control. Every session feels like a test of how well I can manage my mindset under pressure — and that self-awareness often matters more than the cards themselves.

You expressed your thoughts very beautifully, bravo! Personally, I continue to play poker for the money, and only for the money. I hate this game with all my heart, but in the current situation, it's the only source of any income available to me. I can't wait for this bad streak to end and for me to never again see cards in front of my eyes—whether real or pixels on a screen.

Mostly the competition. Having a bit of extra money isn't a bad thing thou. I'd never do it just for the money I enjoy playing and the competition.

Cheers!!!

Very good question! 👏👏👏
I’m striving for financial success through understanding myself and my emotions.
Yes, poker truly is a mirror.
I believe emotional intelligence is one of the keys to growth — both in poker and in life.

I seek self-understanding because without it, I’ll keep repeating the same mistakes over and over, never learning from them.
As you said, the game reflects your character. 👏

I play to gain freedom from the slave-like routine of working for someone else.
I play to become a better version of myself.

Each of us has a whole wagon of flaws — many we’re not even aware of —
but poker helps us uncover them and work on improving ourselves.

Without a doubt, poker is an opportunity for me to escape from many of the problems in my life, and at the same time it's an opportunity to earn money. In terms of self-expression, poker is about creativity for me. Every poker tournament is like a painting that I'm creating.
