Position is one of the most important concepts in poker and has a huge impact on your long-term results.

In simple terms, position refers to where you are seated in relation to the dealer button. The later you act in a hand, the more information you have about your opponents’ actions.

The main positions are:

  • Early Position (EP): You act first after the blinds. You should play tighter and stronger hands.
  • Middle Position (MP): Slightly more flexibility, but still requires caution.
  • Late Position (LP): Includes the Cutoff and the Button. This is where you can play more hands and apply pressure.
  • Blinds: Difficult positions post-flop because you act early in later streets.
Being in position allows you to:

  • Control pot size
  • Bluff more effectively
  • Extract more value from strong hands
  • Make better decisions with more information
Many beginners focus only on their cards, but strong players focus on position + hand strength together.

A marginal hand in late position can be profitable, while the same hand in early position can be a fold.

How much do you adjust your hand selection based on position?
