It may be a cognitive and identity issue (ego + expectations),
not just a simple failure of emotional self-control.

I think it is about not accepting the nature of the game. Many players say they understand variance, but still act as if the game owes them something. Tilt arises from the gap between the mathematical truth and own expectations. Game has variance and one must accept that.If you loose, maybe next time the same situation will go they way it goes 70% of the times.

Tilt is a problem that arises in players who play irresponsibly, take unnecessary risks and play for money they cannot afford to lose. Tilt is simply the result of an irresponsible attitude towards the game. Just as a hangover is the result of drinking alcohol, tilt is the result of irresponsible play.

Emotions are ego in many cases. What we feel as emotions are often signals of the ego, and we simply call them emotions. Ego is present in almost all emotions. Tilt is dissatisfaction of the ego.

The ego enjoys winning in competition and winning money. Everything opposite to that leads us (the ego) into tilt. Disappointment, anger, boredom, hopelessness, revenge — almost everything connected with tilt is actually the ego signaling that expectations and reality do not match.
