Hello people. I live in a new retirement community and one of the residents organized a poker game w $20 buying and a rebuy. There were 10 players so it was broken into 2 tables each with a dummy hand posting blinds and folding. After I won, I was accused of colluding with one of my neighbors and making suspicious bets. Seems that I raised a pot w 6k chips and the short stack pushed so I had to call an additional 500 chips. I had nothing so I folded. So I guess 12k pot and I folded because I didn't wasn't to waste those chips. I guess that's a bad look.. I didn't know these people but they are neighbors. This was the first time I ever played holdem live . I've been playing badly online for 20 years. I heard audible gasps from the organizer and suggested to the group that I was cheating in a text the next day. I did have a conversation with him 3 days later and he explained what I did. So I'll avoid it next time. However I don't feel comfortable trying to win $110.00 from my neighbors who I have to see every day.

Even though I'm still far away from retirement I have noticed that older people can be as nasty and cruel to each other as kids can be.
Maybe it's better to avoid this kind of socializing with your neighbours altogether, and maintain only in safe activities?

It's sad that someone accused you of this. I would not say you should not play with them again, but I would not blame you for avoiding the person who made the comment.

As for that hand, I get what you mean buy wanting to save the chips but you were getting 12 to 1 pot odds. If he showed me pocket aces I would have still called with 72off or pockets 2's.

You say you have been playing badly. You have been a member for 15 years with not too many posts. If you want to improve you should look around this forum and join in. There is so much information and people who would help you improve. We also have a course that would be very helpful to you.

I’m sorry to hear that. I’m sure everyone who’s has ever played their first live game made mistakes. They’d be lying if they said they didn’t. Don’t beat yourself up and congrats on the win!

That's why I've always said, never play poker with friends for money. Friends/neighbors are more important than a few $

This ^ reminds me "so sad - we just won"
Also even when if you do live in apartment you can easily avoid seeing them (daily basis) - for example i havent seen some (who live in the same stairway) for years ...

Couldn't agree with you more. The thing I miss most since retiring are the golden years betwixt 21 & 70 where I mainly associated with people who also were of those same ages. Peace, love, fair skies, lollypops & ice cream, day after day, month after month, year after year. o_O o_O
o_Oo_O

As far as folks jumping you for the 6x raise then folding to 500 chip bet, apologize & get back in the next game, ye be surrounded by fishies & should exploit this opportunity, I mean what the hell, all old folks are evil, wicked, mean & nasty should be treated as such. ;)

I can see why they were upset, you should have known the short stack could go allin and if you raise you should be willing to call for the 1/24 of the pot.

For 500 more chips you should have enough equity to call if you were only dealt 1 card.

Often perception is more important than reality and your play looked dirty. I am pretty sure you did not have any evil intentions, but its important to understand how it will look to the other players.

Thanks for your comments. The game lasted one more week without me and has disbanded.

I agree with TeUnit.

You needed to call there and then adjust to the table perception of what you were doing. You were priced in to call and I totally understand the other players' accusation of you chip dumping.

So, I will assume you are the player with the most poker experience.

$100 is not a lot of money to win - but you can make enemies of new neighbors.

Then at the end of your post you acknowledge this.

Personally I would not go to that kind of game looking to win.

I would go to that game and have a social hour for 2 hours and eat some pizza. Get to know your new neighbors. Forget about winning the $100 - that could happen later and make up for the previous 4 or 5 $20 buyins. Just put names to new faces.

It's just a great opportunity to rub elbows with new neighbors and get to know them a little.

That is my 2 cents.

It is always a possibility that someone will accuse another player of cheating or colluding with other players in a situation like that, Obviously the right thing to have done would be to call for the extra 500 chips and trust to luck.
We had a person who turned up late every week for the League game that I ran with the Landlords consent and of course I refused to let him take part as there were no rebuys or late registration,
But he hung around for a cash game that the Guys started to play after a number of players got busted out, According to the Law here in the UK Cash games are Illegal, and cannot be played in any other establishment other than a Licenced Casino, But the Landlord turned a blind eye to it and as the Tournament Director I had nothing to do with it.
I will admit in taking part in the Cash game occasionally when I got busted out early but I had no say in how it was run. Now the Guy who always came late just to play the cash game, started bringing his Girlfriend and it was noticed that they sat at opposite sides of the table and every time a player got involved in a hand with the pair there were some signals going back and forth across the table and obviously to every one they were cheating!
Now the regulars started telling me what was going on and I told them it was Illegal and nothing I or the Landlord could do, So the Landlord decided that in order to take part in the Cash game they had to first take part in the League game, when this couple turned up late one night the Regulars told them they would not be allowed into the Cash game and when they asked me what was going on I said it was the Landlords decision and I had to abide by his rules,
They stopped coming altogether and the problem solved. No one likes to lose, and they hate to lose to a Cheat!
Even if you were not Chip dumping or cheating it is hard to prove and will be very hard to convince other's who obviously have their minds set on you as being a cheat.

Good Luck, I think you might need it!
