I believe the min. deposit is more than this at most sites (I think it's $20 minimum for Canadians). Something to keep in mind when reading the responses on here, (& depending upon where the live) for some folks here, $250 would be enough money to cover all of their living expenses (Food, rent, utilities) for one month and for others, they make more than this at their jobs in 1 day (and some, probably 1 hour). And because of this, you'll find many responses where they will always recommend only playing Freerolls. imo, this will really limit your learning potential and it's boring as hell. When I first began playing online poker (residing in B.C. Canada on a permanent disability income and working part-time) I chose to deposit to two different poker sites, $175 to one and $150 to the other (Fulltilt & Pokerstars). The online game was much easier back then (partially due to all of the donkey USA players but more so because there just wasn't the amount of info. found online about the game as you'll find these days). IF I were just starting out online today... how much would I deposit. Probably about the same as I chose back in 2007. It also really depends on what type of games you're wanting to play. I'd suggest if it's cash game format, I'd begin at the lowest limits $0.01/$0.02 blinds (a.k.a. '2nl'). Buyin for 100bb's ($2) and set your settings to reload to 100bb's every time you fall below your starting stack of 100bb. Don't move up to 5nl until you can show yourself that you're able to beat this limit (it doesn't matter if you're playing $1/$2 in a live casino... players are better online. Start at the bottom and work your way up (imo)) IF it's tournament play you're interested in, same > deposit $100 to $250. And I would begin by playing tournaments with buyin $1 to $3. (< this is what I did). Maybe play a $5 mtt once in awhile. I'd make a goal of playing ~50 to 100 MTT's at $1 to $3 before choosing to play more $5 games. Have fun and if you need any help, let me know.
