How many people here would, at first though, pay lipservice to the idea that this a dreamworld. This indicates that on some level you aknowledge this being the worthier goal. I bet it's a lot of you. However I bet this is still brushed right past by opiates of the masses. Acting this way is what perpetuates the foolishness. Just saying.
You're more right than you know. I don't just agree with you "on some level", I agree with you completely. However, in the real world "sport" plays a huge role. Much larger than much more worthy goals/topics/professions etc. I'm not saying this is right. In point-of-fact I believe it to be clearly wrong. However, it is what it is.
In case you're not familiar the term "bread and circuses" generally refers to the Roman empire and the concept employed by certain of its rulers that if you kept the general public fed and entertained they could care less as the world around them went to hell.
But, ask yourself.... which topic is going to have broader appeal here at CC, or almost anywhere else for that matter. Lets use soccer as an example since its the topic of the moment. People get so into it and it is so ingrained into the lifestyle (OUTSIDE the US

), that people riot and occassionally kill each other over matches/ favorite teams/ etc.
Can you imagine people being that concerned, that partisan, over who won the last nobel prize in science? I long ago came to grips with the fact that the concerns of the masses are very base and to try to get them to a level even slightly higher is a monumental, if not impossible, task.
Can you tell I've spent considerable time in the teaching profession? Unfortunately, it IS a dream world in which you are living if you honestly think that the average man in the street is going to be more concerned with bettering the human condition as opposed to who won last night's (insert any random sport here) match. Its not right. It just is.
And, by the way, no, I don't teach any more. The masses have won long ago. I no longer have the strength to battle them.
