Chasing a flush

When do people feel that it is appropriate to chase a flush because this part of the game confuses me?

You never want to chase a flush for all of your money, or even half of your money. It looks tempting, but more often than not your going to be dissapointed with the end result.

The book says you should chase a draw when your opponent gives you the appropriate pot odds. I tend to agree with that in cash games and early in a tournament. Later in tourneys, however, I will tend to make slightly looser calls or even bet/raise with flush draws because if i make the flush i'll have more chips...more chips late in the tourney the more of a chance you'll have to final table and even win the tourney.

In cash games is all about pot odds and implied pot odds, but flushes aren't the best example to talk about implied odds, because a third card in the board could be pretty evident for the villain and don't get the right implied odds.
In tournies... well, the answer is depends... if early or late, if short stacked or not, position (you can get a free card using position), pot odds of course, etc

I dont know when it's appropriate, but I always end up getting stuck chasing 15 plus outters, but to tell u the trueth I thnk it's better to chase early on in mtts, and always in cash if the price is right, gl with it

I think as far as chasing a flush anymore depends on what poker site you are on and how much you deposit weekly.lol

Chasing is usually not a good idea in any situation. I think if you are short stacked and flop the draw it may be worth pushing all in. you could get lucky hitting or maybe push the others out of the pot. Its a tough to say unless you are actually in that position.

I disagree with everything here. Chasing is a good idea as Ummagumma said when you have the correct pot odds to call. Also, when you flop the draw the best thing to do is keep the bets as low as possible. Going all in gives you the worst pot odds possible.

It's all about pot odds, and in certain situations you can apply implied odds. Usually a flush will not get paid off for implied odds, so simply using pot odds is your best bet.

I agree with James, especially for ring game play (obviously as long as you are not playing above your bank). if its gonna cost me a dime to stay in a dollar pot, well I am going to chase the flush.

At the borderline where pot odds and chances are close to even... well I let the amounts and my gut sort of guide me. Who I'm up against, the temperature outside.. all of it.

In tourneys, as has been mentioned, I think the strategies have to be weighed slightly differently. Since I am a horrible tourney player, I'll let the others advise.

pot odds ... well if its going to cost you a dollar to say win 10 your getting 10 - 1 pot odds which is ideal !!

outs.. how manny outs you have is also vital is there say your holding 2 suited cards and the flop comes down with two then you have 7 outs to hit another card because in a total pack there are 13 suited cards your holding two and two on the board so you have 7 left which are your outs. you can get an outs chart off the web which gives you a percentage of you hitting these cards on the turn n the river or both. Or are you holding one suited card and 4 are already on the board.

Sorry this was abit basic but thats what i use to access if im going to chase or not

I think it is about pot odds only if it does not going to get you kicked off the game otherwise I would say do not chase the flash draw as it is too risky to get kicked out of the game.

It depends really on how your opponents betting, smallish bets i'd call to see the turn and river,

big bets i'd very rarely call, it depends on the pot odds i guess.

For me its alot to do with my mood swing and if Im playing LAG or TAG. Whether you should chase? Generally if It cost you less than 20% of your stack then go for it. Most times Ill not chase no matter what.

chasing a flush is a good idea in some situations. if you have over cards and know the player your up against is weak for example... but when if comes to call your money, save the money for a better hand

I only chase a GOOD flush, sure I've made those HUGE risks on the river, but if I have 2 suited cards dealt, and the flop leaves me needing only on more club, spade etc, I am going to go for it. Also depends on the high card, nothing lower than a 10 high, weak flushes are not for chasing.

Ah...Jurn8: If you hold 2 suited cards and 2 of the same suit hit on the flop, I count 9 outs to the flush, not 7 outs...4 cards of the suit are accounted for out of 13 in the suit, leaving 9 unaccounted for as outs.

i only chase a flush when i have the ace and both are suited. iplayed a game this morning had A-K spades. I put in three times the big blind and my(intelipoker) opponent went all-in. I called he showed KK. when I won with a flush, the poor guy went on tilt, the vulgarity and ranting went on for for a couple of hands. like previous pot odds are important. also, if your not all-in its worth trying just to change your style and keep your opponent guessing. when you win with a flush draw early in the game sometimes you can bluff later in the game. and anytime there are 3 suited cards on the board some body is going for the flush.

haha you should never chase a flush. when you recieve your cards and you see that its suited everyone hopes to hit their flush, but dont go into the hand purely to make that particular flush. a lot of beginners
do this and lose 90% of the time.

I think that chasing a flush should be tented only during tournaments and not on ring games because that way you risk massacring your entire bankroll!!!

Another factor that should influence on whether you should chase a flush or not is the poker room you play in.

in some poker rooms flushes come more easier than others.A recent example,based on my experience of course,comes from Carbon poker where flushes are practically a rule and not an exception.....

I chased a flush (post-flop) last night in the Carbon FR. Its ok I feel to do "only" when you have the ace in hand. It was Ace suited diamonds with 2 diamonds up. when flopped thats (33%) odds of hitting your flush by the river. someone at the table said 40% and thats even better. I like those odds. I hate my luck, but the odds outweigh my luck there. I say fire away thats the thrill of the game anyway, right? the showdown, the fight, I get more nervous when I win. haha! no puritan poker for me. lets rock!(sometimes) : )

I tend to chase flushes when its cheap or when i have a lot of money/profit. The only problem is it can look a tad obvious to the opponent if you start getting exited by either, checking very quickly or betting minimum.
