Lots of poker variants play 'extremely differently', doesn't mean they don't/can't improve your ability in other formats

don't buy that, they play so extremely differently
I understand that, but in getting more comfortable with multi-way pots, it definitely helps.

I agree. I think that game diversity is important for poker players as a whole, both in how we/they play the game and in the games we/they play.

I think that static cognition in poker is dangerous and there are a lot of "standards" that may become concrete if a player doesn't mix it up every now and then. It allows a player to see things differently, with a more open mind. I'm not saying that PLO will automatically make me a better Hold'em player, but as I see situations develop, I see the relation and actively apply that to develop a greater understanding of the nature of the game. Because poker is a game played with a 52-card deck with 13 cards of 4 suits (ftmp) and that inherent commonality makes all poker games at least somewhat relatable to each other.

Started at NLH and worked up to like 10nl and couldn't get any farther.

Switched to PLO and started at 5 PLO, worked up to 100PLO

Came back to NLH, worked up to 400NL.

I think PLO drastically improved my holdem game. I can't exactly articulate why, but overall hand reading became easier and dealing with swings/tilt/mental strength all improved as well.

That's a pretty sexy answer

I don't think I could do the question justice in a single post, to be honest it might make a decent individual discussion thread. But in general differing poker variants and variants of specific games offer different perspectives and a more rounded view of situations.

Like Benji said I think PLO can help your ability in multiway pots, massively emphasises the importance of playing in position, helps you identify hand ranges much more... dynamically I guess would be the word and forces you to view hand strength more 'relatively'. There's also a shit tonne of pure math in PLO so if you want to improve that element of your game it can be great

And that's just looking at what you can learn from other game types. Then you consider the alterations you have to make when changing from full ring, to 6 max to heads up... Each require specific skills that you can transfer across. Then there's sngs and mtts, that can give you a lot of experience in dealing with a wide variety of SPRs... It goes on and on.

I feel like poker is such a fluid game and you lose a lot by not exploring other game types. It keeps you fresh, keeps you thinking and improves specific skills without you really noticing til you go back to what you're used to

Whilst I do agree that playing other game formats is useful for picking up transferable skills and developing different aspects of gameplay. I don't really think that playing PLO would be more useful for narrowing golden ranges than getting a lot of experience playing golden.

I'm not sure why I think that, maybe because in holdem you often need to narrow down ranges a lot further than you do in PLO.

I have withdrawn what was left of my roll, my laptop needs to be repaired and I am finally moving out. I'm going to be moving interstate so money is going to be tight for a while

I agree; I never really felt like PLO helps me range Hold'em players (assuming holdem and not golden; damn auto-correct). I think that when deuces brings up the mental game. that's a huge part of it, given the swingy nature of PLO, but I disagree with hand reading ability in HE being heightened by PLO play. I think that feeling may actually come from just being more patient as you have to be able to fold really good non-nut hands in PLO that you may spew with in HE.

Congratulations on your upcoming move!

With poker stars 2 red aces promotion in zoom does it become correct to to flat call or possibly even limp aces just so you don't win it pre flop. Or is 50 bbs not enough to justify playing in such a sub optimal manner?

Hey guys some info about me,

I've played some home games, won some money and decided to try my luck on the internet. Despite everyone always telling "new players" to not play zoom. I decided to start to play some zoom (2NL). I'm currently 8.2k hands in, and I am currently a winning player. 15,8 bb's/100.

My questions;
is 8,2k hands a good enough sample size?
Is 15,8 bb's/100 good enough for someone who just started?
Is 15,8 bb's/100 good enough to go up (to 5nl)
Should I play on "normal" tables instead of zoom? I think I like zoom more because I haven't bought a HUD yet. I'm hjust trying PT4 and HM2, but without hud I think it is better to play zoom...

Also any tips on training content. I don't like books, I've read a bit, but I highly prefer video's / streams. I'm currently watching/have watched :

Youtube: Jcarver(Jason Sommervile), Gripsed, xxFlix
Twitch: Staples, xxFlix, xcy4nk4li

Any suggestions?
