Is it worth buying HEM if I already purchased PT3 a year ago? Is it that much better than PT3? Seems I see HEM as the dominant HUD on training vids and stuff.
If you play mostly cash, and probably SnGs too, then many consider HEM to be stronger in those areas than PT3. If you played primary MTTs, then PT3 is more MTT-friendly and feature rich. The biggest holdup with HEM properly supporting MTTs is largely due to a database design that was originally developed for cash games only -- when HEM started out it had no tourney support to speak of, but was highly optimized for cash games, which is why so many cash players abandoned PT3 for HEM (that, and PT3's support at the time sucked hard). It really was ahead of it's time. As they attempted to bolt on MTT support after the fact, they were a bit hamstrung by a database design that favored cash games and made certain MTT-related features difficult to implement. And of course, re-engineering HEM's underlying DB structure after all this time would be a huge undertaking, and they can barely keep up with site updates that break things. It took them several weeks to add support for the new FT METs and Stars Home Games, which required only minor tweaks from a pure programming standpoint. I was about to start working on developing a tool to support Home Games when they finally sent me an internal build that fixed it before they released it publicly a few days later.
everything
But yeah, at least as a SNG player (shudder), HEM is a lot better it seems, mostly for review purposes. I think it's HUD filters are a little better too, but not sure about that.
Whatever gap there was between HEM and PT3 have, IMO, closed greatly. When HEM was still a one-man shop, Roy handled everything very well and his support and frequency of new features blew away PT3 at the time. As its popularity and marketshare exploded, however, he had to add support and development staff, and the personal attention and quality of work started declining.
HEM has become a bit of a mess lately, with support getting slower and almost every release breaking some functionality. I've been chiding them for some time over their software development process, which is lacking in QA and just broken overall, IMO. I've almost offered my professional services in that regard, but just don't really have the time should they even choose to take me up on it.
The frustration of many of us long-time users (I bought HEM Pro in Aug 2008) has been coming to a boil lately, and many have either gone (back) to PT3 or are considering it. I'm one of them, but I still love HEM and want to give them some time to make things right.
