The truth is, it's money that makes us play poker so passionately.
If, for example, chess or any other game involved such a large flow of money, then we would definitely play chess just like poker.
Compared to chess, poker is designed so that we don't have to make any effort to think, but chess requires a lot of brain effort.Of course, poker also requires intelligence, but it does not always determine the outcome of the game. Many of us love and hate poker at the same time, and this contrast is what makes the game so appealing.

I agree with you about sometimes having a love/hate relationship with poker (although the balance for me is more love than hate—when that changes I hope I’ll be wide enough to stop playing because life is too short to be aggravated all the time).

I disagree about playing poker mostly for the money. I play mostly for the strategy and the social aspect of the game. While there is some luck in poker, playing a skillful game is what helps you win over the long term.

It's difficult to compare the average annual income of a professional chess player with a poker player. Chess is pure logic, while poker is based on psychological and mathematical probabilities. And also different from chess, poker is not based on "matchmaking" (process of matching two or more people, based on skills), people play at a table with all levels.

I emphasize money because where there is big money involved, there are a lot of people involved.

Chess players are smart, educated, and talented, and chess is not a game of luckBut if we made it a variation of a poker game, a lot more people would get involved. For example, create an online chess game similar to poker where people can play for money

Interesting take! I actually think poker is, before anything else, a game, and like any game, it should first be about fun. Sure, money adds excitement and gives the game a competitive edge, but if that’s the only motivation, it can easily turn into stress instead of enjoyment.

The best players seem to love the battle itself: the mind games, the variance and the thrill of the decisions. Money just makes the whole experience more intense. I think when we manage to keep that “fun-first” mindset, poker stays much healthier and enjoyable, no matter if we’re winning or losing.

Money isn't the reason why I play tournaments. I've been playing them for over seven years now and I started for three reasons. I've loved playing cards since my mother taught me gin rummy and cribbage when I was little, I wanted to do something competitive again, and I always wanted to try poker tournaments. When I shot smallbore rifle and sporting clays competitively it was for pins and trophies. Money is the trophy in poker. but I'd play tourneys just for the entry fee and a pin or trophy. :)

Emily, I totally get it in terms of competition. As a kid, I played sports all day on the weekends while there was enough light to see, played high school football and wrestling...as an adult standing only 5'1", I could not compete with athletes who were better physical specimens...I love tennis, and I have been involved in professional tennis as a line umpire (when they used real people in the 70s), but could I compete with Roger Federer? No...could I beat Tiger in golf? No...but I have a chance against anybody in the world (over the short haul) in poker. It is not the money for me. I competed in the 2019 wsop Colossus event with the Cardschat team, and I survived into Day 2 and cashed...I outlasted many pros in the 22,000 player field...the excitement was palpable...that's what poker is about. Very few will ever make enough money playing poker to earn a living at it...for most, it is entertainment.

Sometimes it's a vicious cycle: money, poker, money, poker, until there's no more money.

Hey there,
I guess people play poker for a combination of reasons, including the mental challenge of skill and strategy, the thrill of competition, and the social aspect of the game. While some are drawn to the potential to win money, others find enjoyment in the psychological battle. The satisfaction of executing a good play, and the unique blend of luck and skill.

If I could achieve more good results, it would be even more fun, but there are so many players that there probably won't be enough for everyone.

I agree that poker doesn't always deliver the same outcome for all players, unlike chess. But don't you think that's enough to make us fierce competitors to overcome this difficult equation? Isn't there room in this equation for other players to win? I believe that poker stands out and surpasses chess in terms of intelligence and difficulty of winning, even for star players, and that's enough to make poker a game that is always difficult to master.

True, money adds excitement, but I think the mix of luck and skill is what really keeps people hooked on poker.

Poker is still a big mystery, especially online poker.Because everyone has their own opinion about why poker attracts them.

Money influences why we play poker, and why we like it too, even if it's a lie, now with money we play poker with more reason.

...I know how to play chess, but I never really went into it because it doesn't have a good financial return. Poker gives me that, and I like the results... just like arcade games at EVO pay out very well, which is why I'm a competitor too...

Poker is a fun to me. Money are secondhand question. I can play poker and look at my phone, talk and watch TV at one and the same time. Chess is another subject.

I think it might be best to say "there are many reasons that drive people to play poker"
Like some others have said, I too am in it mostly for the fun of competition.
If, for example, chess or any other game involved such a large flow of money, then we would definitely play chess just like poker.

If chess had 'freerolls' I'm sure that many more would be into it. ;)
Compared to chess, poker is designed so that we don't have to make any effort to think,
I actually strongly disagree with this ^ statement. Poker at its lowest levels requires very little mental effort, especially if one already has a lot of experience and is able to easily adjust to others who really aren't thinking much... or much beyond 'level 1' type of thinking.
But as you begin to become more skilled, one finds that there is much MUCH more to this game than initially thought. I have had countless times during my poker playing journey where I've stopped and thought to myself "Wow... was I ever a HUGE Fish back then" ... and then again... and again... & again. It takes A LOT of practice to get good at the game of poker.
Mike Sexton, "Poker is a game that takes a minute to learn but a lifetime to master"

It's hard for me to imagine playing poker just for the satisfaction of playing. Money has always been a part of poker, and it always will be. Without it, poker can't survive. There's nothing better than having great satisfaction in what you do and, on top of that, profiting from it.

For me, it’s kind of a mix. If money were completely removed from poker, I’d probably play tournaments less often — the stakes give it meaning and focus. But at the same time, I’m not really into pure grinding (cash or spins) just to make money. What I enjoy is the decision-making part — ICM spots, structure, deep runs.

So yeah, money is more like a spice for me, not the main course. It keeps me focused, but it’s not the reason I sit down to play. I’d rather play fewer games, think deeper, and let good decisions bring the results — not chase the results themselves.

You probably won't get rich playing poker. Most people will lose money over the long term, and some will win big.It depends on what you call money: for some, 20 dollars is money, for others it’s pennies. The amount of money you make in poker will be directly related to the amount of effort you put in.

Of course, money always solves everything, but the key is to play with something you don't mind losing.
