I’ve been thinking about what really keeps people playing poker long term. Some players are very focused on profit and results, while others mainly enjoy the competition and social side of the game. For me, it feels like a balance of both, because focusing only on money can get stressful. Enjoying the process makes it easier to handle downswings and variance. I’m curious how others approach this. Do you play mainly to win money, or mostly for the enjoyment of the game?

I think most people start poker for different reasons, but what keeps them playing long term usually changes over time. At the beginning it might be the money, the thrill or just having fun with friends. But if you stay in the game for years, I feel like you need something deeper than just short-term results, otherwise the swings become too hard to deal with.

For me, the balance you mentioned is key. Wanting to win and improve is important, but enjoying the process, the learning and the mental challenge is what makes poker sustainable. When you actually like studying, grinding, and competing, downswings feel more manageable and even meaningful. I’m curious too how others here evolved in their motivation as they spent more time in the game.

I went into this game purely for the social aspect. I learned that I'm very competitive in poker, and when I'm playing, I like to win! :)

I love the psychology of the game and even some of the math. I'm very curious and so I study and read a lot about the game and strategies that evolve over time. The game isn't always predictable so it never gets boring.

But long term, for me, playing is for fun and relaxation. I enjoy playing. It isn't a grind. When it becomes a chore, I will likely stop.

I started playing for profit. Relaxation and fun at the same time.

I play for fun, but I get particular satisfaction from the game when I win money. In my case, it's also a balance. Overall, I think poker is the perfect hobby, which, in addition to the enjoyment of the process, can also be a source of additional income.

Hobby, entertainment, money-making opportunities, competition, adrenaline and a combination of these in general.
I don't think there's one that stands out, but rather the combination of them all gives you the desire to play.

It starts with fun, but in the end, it's important to focus on winning.

When I started it was for money and money only, but now I've fallen in love with the game that even if you take the money away I'll still be here

I play mostly for money. To be honest, I like playing video games much more than poker. That's why I only play poker to earn money. But poker is also an opportunity to prove myself.

That pretty much sums it up for me as well. But lately I'm finding that interest waning. I'm playing less and less these days.

For me, poker is about balance. The money matters, of course, but what really keeps me coming back is the challenge making decisions with incomplete information, improving over time, and handling the mental side. If it was only about money, the swings would be unbearable. Enjoying the process is what makes poker sustainable long term.

Money, excitement, or just the fun of the game are all things that make me play poker.

I play for fun. I earn enough money, so money is not a motivator for me. But the feeling of victory is what keeps me coming back to the game again and again.

For many poker players, this is dialogue of minds . It develops skills that are invaluable in life.

For both. I love winning, that's undeniable, but at the same time I really love the game itself. Poker is a game of chance, but if you have a little luck and use your brains you can be profitable.

I play poker just to make money. If I lose money playing poker, that doesn't amuse me. But if I make money that makes me very happy. So I play poker to make money and have fun. I already have fun with a lot of other things and poker is for me to make money.

I think, because we like to recreate ourselves, to spend whatever free time we each have, and at the same time earn money.

I’d be lying if I said I don’t want to win money when I play, but I mainly play because I enjoy the challenge and the game itself. Focusing only on profit can kill the fun.
