In poker good play does not always get rewarded, and bad play does not always get punished. And this is the exact reason, why its still possible to make money in poker long term. If bad players always lost (like in chess), then they would quickly stop playing, or at least begin to study and get better. But because bad players can also experience that winning feeling, they continue for much longer, and they also continue making the same mistakes again and again.
So while bad beats are always annoying in the moment, you need to learn to make peace with them as much as possible. In a recent hand on ACR Poker the flop got checked through, and then I led the turn with top pair and got raised. The river paired third or fourth pair, the opponent made another big bet, I paid off, and he turned over trips. But instead of going on monkey tilt I just laughed it off. Because in the long run raising third or fourth pair is not a winning strategy. So in a sense I won the hand just not this time.
