Hi everyone,

I’m still a beginner and currently playing freerolls.
Sometimes I feel confused choosing starting hands, especially in PLO, because many players play very loose.

What kind of starting hands should I focus on in freerolls?
Is it better to play tighter and wait for strong hands, or adjust to loose opponents?

Thanks in advance, any advice is appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you and have been playing PLO and PLO8 freerolls, cash games on Replay Poker (no real money), and also a few cash games on Americas Card Room. I've been enjoying it and to go into a pot I like to have at least three things going on in my hand. Those three or more thins would include pairs, flushes, connected, straight possibilities, and if I'm playing PLO8 which is hi/low then an ace along with a two, or possibly a 3 or 4, could be one of the three things in my hand.

Most PLO freerolls there are multiway pots very often so tighter does not help us as hands Like AAKK do best vs fewer players. Why?
Board interaction. How do we play AAKK on a 764 flop vs 3 players? Do we expect to get stacks in and be winning? Do we think we can pot control it vs 3 players?
Do we call a pot size bet? Do we call any bet?

How many other boards is AAKK struggling to win on? Two thirds of all boards are not great for us. 66% of boards have sets- straight draws and 2 pair hands possible that beat us and the main proverb of PLO is "if the nuts are possible then someone has it"

When we play multiway PLO we want hands that win by making straights and better and when we make those straights we get paid. JT98 is a crusher holding in PLO freerolls AAT9 double suited is also a crusher hand multiway better than AAKK 1 suit or worse. Why? Because we can over flush and over straight people.

Do not just play tighter- play hands that make the nuts by the river without having to hit 4 outers like AAKK would have to do. that is a simplification but we want to have redraws to the nuts at all times and those draws want to be 8 outs or more.
Still play AAKK just know it is not a power hand in no-foldem PLO good but not a crusher hand.
