A lot of people talk about strategy and math in poker, but I feel like mental strength plays just as big of a role. You can know the right play, but if you’re tired, tilted, or distracted, it’s hard to execute it consistently. At the same time, solid fundamentals are obviously important too. I’m starting to think poker is as much a mental game as a technical one. What do you think matters more in the long run, skill or mindset?

I find part of it is statistics- you need to know that JJ versus AK is 50-50 % chance to win one way or the other. If you have AK suited, it's an extra 2 %. The mental part is not getting tilted or playing your best despite not having playable hands ( sometimes you have to fold for hours and hours). Or to try to play your best despite losing flips. Because more people are aware of the theoretical part of poker the edges are getting smaller and smaller.

Both your skills and your psychological state are important. No matter how experienced a player you are, if you are in a bad mood or under the influence of negative emotions, you are unlikely to be able to play at a good level.

EIt's a combination of mental strength and skill, because when you use skill and still get knocked down, you need a strong mental game to stay in the game.

In my opinion, poker is divided into three main essential components:
50% skill
30% of patience
20% of luck

As others have said its obviously both. Its a bit like asking, if its most important for a car to have an engine or wheels. Without either you are not getting anywhere :)

Nothing mental or skill, it’s just a flip 50/50 , you win or you lose 50% like black jack .

Poker is both mental and skill‑based, but skill tends to dominate over the long run.
You need strategic thinking, emotional control, and the ability to read people, which makes the mental side very important.
At the same time, experienced players consistently outperform beginners because they understand probabilities, table dynamics, and long‑term decision making.
Luck matters in the short term, but skill decides who wins over months and years.
The other question is what draws people more to poker - rhe pschological battle or the strategic depth?

The technical side is your 'toolkit.' This includes understanding pot odds, GTO (Game Theory Optimal) ranges, and equity realization. Without this, you’re just gambling. Skill is what allows you to make the 'correct' decision over and over again

Mental strength is a skill you must master to level up your game, just like any other skill. If you are constantly tilting then it’s up to you to find out why, and when you can overcome this you will be more in the moment, you will be present and ready to play the next hand without the distraction of what happened earlier. Even if someone tries to tilt you with a slow roll or talking crap about your play when you play live, laugh about it inside, never let anyone get to you!
