This is one of my favorite topics, because there is so much psychology involved.
Good reading skills can lead to huge wins and protect you from big losses.

I always try to understand what emotional state my opponent is in when he plays against me.
Which emotion is driving his decisions right now — confidence or fear?

Sometimes a player slowplays, but I can feel the confidence behind it.
Sometimes he is aggressive, but I still see clear signs of fear.
Some players don’t even care about winning — they just came for emotions.
Those players will call your all-in with hands like 66, ATo, J8s, 44, 33, T9s, 78s, KJo, QTo, just because they “feel like it.”

Others lost a big pot and want revenge — so they tighten up and play more seriously.
And some are desperate to win anything, which makes them open or call re-raises with very loose hands.

In online poker, timing, bet sizing, player types, HUD stats, and your own notes help you understand these patterns.

Share your knowledge and experience about reading opponents online —
I will be genuinely grateful for every insight.

Reading people online is mostly about patterns. Timing, sizing, history — that’s your “live tell.” Aggro guys stay aggro, scared money freezes up, and tilted players start clicking buttons. If you track how they react to pressure, you can spot who’s confident and who’s just gambling. It’s not perfect, but over time the patterns are super clear.

“ChatGPT also recommends paying more attention to players’ decision patterns. They give about 70% of the information you need to decide whether to call, raise, or fold.”

Great topic. I agree that psychology plays a huge role, even online.

For me, one of the most important things is identifying emotional patterns over time rather than single hands. Timing tells, bet sizing, and how a player reacts after winning or losing a big pot say a lot. Some players clearly shift gears after a bad beat — either becoming too tight or overly aggressive.

I also pay close attention to consistency. When a player suddenly deviates from their usual sizing or tempo, it often signals discomfort or uncertainty. Notes are extremely valuable for this, especially in online games where you face the same opponents frequently.

I use HUDs mainly for study, but during play I try to rely more on observation, notes, and context. Understanding why someone is making a decision is often more important than the numbers themselves.
