Johnson has been money all year. You have a better pitcher to put out there?
Not to mention Johnson used to be a starting pitcher, so he can pitch 2-3 innings easily in the event it goes into extras.
Johnson has started exactly one game in his career, his very first appearance in the majors in 2006. In that game he only lasted 3 innings.
This year in 71 appearances, he threw more than one inning exactly twice, both 2 innings and both by June 5th. Putting him out there in that situation is NOT what got the Orioles to the post-season. In my opinion it wasn't the right move - disagree all you want - the A's did the same thing and Balfour gave up a run in a losing effort. Closers have a mental approach that just doesn't always translate very well to non-save situations. The "entire" bullpen performed well throughout the year, having their best team bullbpen ERA in 20 years.
The good news is that it was just one game. The bad news is that the heart of the order looked really bad, albeit against a good pitcher (Jeter and Ichiro will take what the pitcher gives them and doesn't try to do too much - the O's big bats have to do the same). But another veteran pitcher who's thrown well against the O's is going again tonight. If they can't get anything going against Pettite, this series may be over just as it's getting started.
