I've always wanted to dabble in sports betting but felt like i'm not knowledgeable in sports betting in general to get into it. I know a lot about football... but that refers more to understanding the rules in depth. Sure I can probably name 3-5 players from every team, but that doesn't mean i'm that guy that says " the Steelers win 80 % of their games on the road in the snow " like some of those folks that are way into it and can remember every little detail.

UFC however is something that I have participated in ( trained BJJ as well as Muay-Thai and traditiional boxing ) and can rattle off a plethora of facts about each fighters bout history.

Has anyone here ever bet on the UFC?

If I ever was to place money on events... this would be it.

Thanks friends,

Travis

I don´t like to bet on UFC. It is a street fight with a paycheck. Anything can happen.

I've bet. UFC is amazing to bet, when a fighter has a big streak and fights vs underdog, it's amazing opportunity to bet. And the most important thing, look if the fighter is active, if a guy doesn't fight 1 year ago, never put money in!

Max,

I see where you're coming from completely. There is always that one fantastic punch or mis step that ends the night for a particular fighter.

I have found however when they do things like UFC embedded and you can see who's training and who's spending more time just having fun and living up the lifestyle... sometimes you can get a feel for which one is hungrier. I do believe that 70% of the time i'm picking the winner when I do UFC Fantasy, which is free and highly entertaining.

You have the option to pick the type of win, Submission or KO, as well as if it's going to be a decision. They dont get as crazy as which type of submission because there are tons of possibilities... as well as a KO is a KO. Not as far as head kick or right hook.

Again - I appreciate everyones responses. I think im gonna leave the sports betting to the pros and continue to do my free fantasy UFC picks. If you do well enough you can win little prizes. Give it a shot if you're into UFC. Just like anything else it adds that level of excitement when each bout starts.

Gav,

That's what i'm talking about!! I'm the type that if I see an underdog is there or if its somebodys UFC debut... my mind goes crazy. Is the stage going to be too big for them and they're nervous? Well they've had X amount of fights already so i'm sure it's not going to play a role. We all know about " ring rust " which is what you were describing to never put money in . Thats probably correct nine times out of ten but if they had some crazy injury and prior to that they were extremely active... that could play a role.

Something I really enjoy doing is when it's a UFC debut I like to go on youtube and just search for all their grainy, first hole in the wall fights. You can learn a lot about a fighters confidence and style.

Great response.

Vision,

Are you located in the US? As much as I say I should stay away from it... I wouldn't mind throwing a couple bucks on my favorite card just to see what happens. I do pretty well in the UFC fantasy picks.

Which site do you use to bet? What is the biggest payout you've ever received on an MMA card? And you say MMA cards so i'm assuming you aren't just limited to UFC. Do you bet on other platforms such as Bellator?

The thing about betting UFC / MMA in general is it's not uncommon for there to be super-short-priced favourites. Israel Adesanya is paying $1.17 against Anderson Silva this weekend, for example. You need to be right about 6/7 times (about 85%) for that bet to even break even. If you think he wins that fight 90% of the time, you've got a marginally profitable bet. If you only think he wins 80% of the time though, it's a loser. In a pick 'em contest, you get just as much credit for correctly picking a huge favourite as you do a huge underdog. That's not the case when you're betting. That said, MMA is also a market where the sportsbooks aren't as good at handicapping as they are in other more established (and maybe more data-driven) sports. If you know what you're doing, if you're patient and if you shop around you can find some value. In my experience, you're most likely to find value on fights either with unknowns where the books and the market don't have enough information to price the fight correctly, or on huge fights where the public is betting big amounts of money with their hearts, not their heads. Mayweather-McGregor was a great fight for that, for example.

Damn. Just reading your post has got my head spinning. It sounds like I need to do WAYYY more research before I even think of betting.

The way I imagined it was like hey... since the underdog is probably Anderson Silva.... i'd have to put a few hundred down on Adesanya to gain just a little when if he wins. Even attempting to explain how my brain is going through the process... I can tell i'm an idiot in this subject haha.

But yeah just for shits and giggles I think Adesanya is gonna whoop Silva.
My money would be on Whitaker for the belt as well. Gastellum has never really impressed me. Very basic fighter IMO but he does get better with each bout... should be an interesting matchup.

Smart take, Value on Anderson is great and I think Adesanyas going to play with fire tonight. The same way Anderson did against Weidman.

Gastelums got a pretty good shot of winning too if he can get Whittaker to stand and bang in the pocket with him. He’s got some heavy hands.

No way Gastelum takes a decision win in Australia against the Aussie though so I’d stay away from that.

Best of luck :)

I always pick fights in my head but I've only laid down money once and that was the Khabib vs McGregor fight. Having watched both these fighter's fights for years and following them on Instagram, knowing Khabib was not only better but more ready, I was sure I was getting +EV. Afterwards I felt like I should've bet more since the fight went exactly how I thought it would.

Terrible news. Whittaker out because of an abdominal hernia. It seems he went into surgery but it isn't sure since this news just broke out.

I think to bet on any sport you first have to like to follow the sport.
Knowing him, and accompanying those involved in the event, can get a guess.
I see that this would be the most comfortable line of thought ...

When it comes to good sports bettors they are looking at field conditions, weather, previous results against another team. They are able to put all the results together and pick out the teams with an edge. I am a huge UFC fan but it makes me nervous to bet on it. The gloves are so small it really comes down to a good punch sometimes. As an example I would never have picked Henry Cejudo to beat T.J. Dillashaw because T.J. I figured would be able to fight off the take down and out strike Cejudo, but Henry TKO'D him with what looked like weak punches. So it just scares me to bet on UFC. The word is that if u do enough studying on baseball factors it is the best sport to bet on but it takes a ton of studying.
