I think it is. People don't realize how hard it is to drive one of those cars around at very high speeds for hours. Some people may say it's a skill, but it's a "different" kind of sport.

I would say its a competition, not a sport. I mean it began as a bunch of moonshiners trying to drive as fast as they could to outrun the feds and now, the biggest difference is people pay to see it, and corporatioins sponsor it.

In Horse Racing the horse is who gets the credit as the athlete. So why not mark jimmy johnson jeff gordon the busches as "nascar jockeys" and award the trophies to the m&m car?

Yes it's a sport as much as chess or poker or harness racing or etc. is a sport. Is it an athletic contest, not so much but still it does require more physical preparation to go 500 laps at Bristol than a lot of other sports.

I say yes, on the grounds that I acknowledge F1, WRC and all other "superior" (sorry NASCAR fans) forms of motor racing as sport, so I guess NASCAR has to be included too.
