This is addition to the NCAA penalties handed down today:

a four-year postseason ban
$60 million fine (one year's football revenue)
vacation of wins dating to 1998
loss of 20 total scholarships for each of the next 4 years

Patero's win total goes from 409 to 298 and he goes from 1st to 12th on the all-time wins list.

Oh - missed the news on the first penalties. Now it all makes more sense. Sounds like they are screwed for a very long time. Won't it take them maybe another 4-5 years or so to recover after the 4 year penalties?

It will certainly hurt for a long time but the thing that could / should have happened is that current players should have been given the chance to transfer without penalty but that didn't happen.

I agree with you on that - it is the one thing Joe and I have been discussing. Innocent students/players are having to pay the price for something they had nothing to do with.

According to what I've read on ESPN, they are allowing current players to transfer without penalty. NCAA is also helping with extra scholarships to the schools that are accepting the players.

As for Penn State - well... they deserved every bit of this. 8-10 years is my estimate, if they even come back at all... Some are calling this the "death penalty" for a collegiate athletics program.

I think these penalties are extremely harsh and absolutely warranted. I'm not exactly sure how much worse it could have gotten. Some would say this is much worse than the "death penalty", which would have simply shut down the football program for a year or two. I heard someone suggest that the program was not shut down because that would affect a lot more innocent people - the student-athletes, the student body, the band, and others whose livelihoods depend on the sport (venders, I suppose, not coaches).

I live in PA, and the Philly area is full of Penn State graduates. While many of them were disappointed when this all came to light, and had a bit of trouble letting go of their worship for the Penn State football legacy and their beloved coach, I don't hear any more of that now. Everyone is just upset that this happened at a place they love, and no one is suggesting things should have been handled any differently. If they don't agree, at least they're keeping it to themselves.

The kids in school now should be allowed to transfer out to a school of their choice. They should be allowed to "take" their scholarship with them for the duration of their college carreer. Penn State should have to pay the tuition to the school a student athlete chooses to go to.

The "butterfly effect"this will have on all schools that have football programs may never be able to be measured.

It was right that they took away Paterno's winningest record. That seemed to mean more to him that the poor kids this was done to. As someone said on the radio today, it's just a shame he isn't alive to see it being done.

As has been said, punishment not harsh enough...I seem to a recall a certain former college football team from Texas, SMU getting the death penalty(program done forever) back in the 80s for recruiting violations and a slush fund used to pay players under the table for new cars, getting their parents on board, pretty much whatever it took... Point being, this was enough to put the brakes on SMU footbll permanetly, but yet Penn State can cover up for a pedophile for years and years, and they get off with this....not a light punishment, but certainly not what they should have received. As far as I am concerned, they(Penn State) cannot be trusted to do the right thing clearly so they need to have their cash cow taken away. Period.

I dont see why you penalize the entire football program and take away from people that had nothing to do with it. Punishing the entire football team for multiple years for reasons that arent exactly directly related to football doesnt seem right. Maybe harsher punishments for people involved and a lot of replacing to do within the program but dont see how all this is the right thing to do.

Firing and prosecuting has already taken place where applicable. These punishments are for the institution that allowed these crimes to continue so they might win a few more football games.

^^This. Exactly. The whole Sandusky thing began to come to light something like 14 years ago. At that time he was "allowed" to retire, but- here's the ridiculous part- he was still permitted access to the grounds and buildings, continued to bring young boys there, and everyone, JoePa included, simply looked the other way FOR FOURTEEN YEARS.

This is all they could have done. The way the laws are they could not fire him or restrict his access to grounds and buildings. Since the DA refused to press charges they as a government entity could not fire him. Sad, but the truth. It's very strange that the DA didn't press charges, if he had the last 14 yrs would not have happened.
