PLO8 Hand Analysis

First post ever.

This was late at night at the micro table. Villain (JDpowerhouse) playing loose. Pretty sure neither of us knew what we were doing. I still cant believe he called.

In retrospect I probably should have waited for a better spot. My hand is far from great when we get it all in but I think I had good equity.

It was an easy laydown pre flop when villain made a 4x raise. Our hand is too weak to put so much money in pre flop.

Your best chance was to limp and then call a small raise to see a flop for a cheaper price. But instead you raised and bloated the pot allowing villain to make a big raise. That was the last chance to get out.

We can limp with that hand and hope to connect, but this is an easy fold pre-flop to a big raise in front. True, you are Aced, but your Ace is unsuited, and the only low hand you're going to hit square is with a 2 4 OTF.

When you have a maniac in PLO, your goal should be to limp in with hands like this one, to see flops as cheap as possible. As played though, you can't fold.

This hand is also a little speculative. You'd prefer to have stronger hands to go up against a maniac. The split pot games reward very tight play, and when you add a crazy opponent to the mix, your starting hand standards should become downright boring.

As it played out, you made the right move postflop.

The villain is just a very lucky newbie.

Thanks for the replies. I agree that my initial raise is awful, as my starting hand is marginal at best. Bloating the pot with mediocre cards against bad opponents is not my smartest play.

Still learning the ins and outs of PLO8, it is very fun and seems to be plenty of spots to capitalize on bad plays/ bad players!

Given that you did not have a suited A, which is always better in PLO8, with your hand, I would have checked the flop for control. The goal for any split pot game is to win 3/4 to the entire pot. You can get a lot of rake ripped from you if you only get 1/2.
" I still cant believe he called." Of course he called, because he is playing PLO on a PLO8 table and is hoping for hands like this. And he is going to jam like a PLO player every time! You should always be thinking this one word: Scoop!

If you can scoop, then you play your guts out. If you think you can even get 3/4 of the pot, you play hard. Avoid all ins like this as his rpf told you he did not know how to play PLO8. Be the better player and you will fleece this guy in the future.

Do not agree. This is PLO8 game so A358 is somewhat stronger than such hand in PLO. And actually I don't think the villain's call shoving on the flop is correct.

It's okay to make a small bet with an A-3 preflop. The 3-bet after the flop is crazy. This type of hand is probably only going to get you a split pot at the most even if it hits. At the lower levels of Omaha H/L your going to see lots of people get into the pot, and somebody will often try to pull off a squeeze play just like in hold em.
Your probably better off in the long run trying to control the size of the pot by keeping it small when you are chasing after a low hand, since they don't always hit. You should only shove all your chips in if you know for sure you have the absolute nuts.

We have a 9 out straight draw and a nut low draw with c-fit protection against a player who we know is willing to get it in with marginal holdings. Am I missing something? You know we were a 60/40 favorite when the money went in right?

I disagree completely with pcgnome. A3 is a speculative holding that needs a deuce to flop, and isn't worth a raise without other premium combos (big pairs, suited A, two broadway cards). Once we flop a fit, I'm totally willing to shove on a guy who bets everything.
