Pretty sure more people know Who the president of the US is, by name, than know Beckham.
Worldwide, I know for a fact Beckham would have been more famous than George Bush. With Obama there's the whole black thing but still, there's 2 or 3 billion people in Asia and Africa who think he is literally a god.
As far as the most famous athlete ever. I doubt it. I believe that every time a question such as this comes up the answer is usually Muhammad Ali. Not a huge fan of boxing either, but certainly much more than I am a fan of soccer.
I don't know how old you are, so I wonder if your age may be skewing your perspective. While it may be fine (though debateable, to say he is the most famous athlete (outside the US, obv.) of your time, or his time, it is a HUGE statement to say he is the most famous athlete EVER. Again, this is NOT my opinion. There have actually been studies, surveys, that sort of thing done on this many times. The answers always come back Muhammad Ali. If you're not old enough to remember his classic bouts with other of the sports greats during boxing's heyday, I imagine it'll be hard for you to understand.
Oh, and I mean worldwide, not just the US. Check up on some of Ali's matches in Africa. Check how revered he still is in many African nations. Will Beckham command that respect a full generation or more after he retires?
I admit all-time may have been an overstatement, but if you did a true world-wide servey including all of Asia, it's going to be close at least.
As for the part about soccer eventually being on the same level in the US as football and baseball.....Ummm, NO. That will happen about the same time PLO replaces NLHE as the most popular form of poker.
Haha yeah, probably not![]()
The only reason soccer is so popular worldwide is the fact that people in the poorest countries (most of the world) can play it because it requires just a ball. People in general only like watching sports they know something about, so sports they have experience playing. Thus, the world loves soccer.
Yet us in North America, are fortunate enough to have the means to play sports that require equipment and such. We don't grow up on soccer and even if we play it at recess as kids it's not part of our culture like hockey and other sports.
Basically, I figure that if the world would have grown up with the means to play other sports such as hockey or football then these sports would be much more popular than soccer because they are SOOOOO much less boring. Seriously I know I'm going to get flamed for this but I believe its true.
The world loving soccer has nothing to do with how good of game it is...just with the fact that poor people can play it.
Flaming ensue
I still don't believe this for a second. Nothing will ever compare to throwing down jumpers and having a kick-about.
Europe is fairly rich and American Football is nothing here, hockey even less so. I think the fact that these sports have never really made much headway into Europe despite our ability to play it if we chose (I've played American Football, it's pretty cool) means it won't happen in Africa or Asia either.
Football is and always will be the greatest game on Earth, precisely because of how good the game is.
