I was thinking about all the sports talk and how football is becoming more and more popular in the US and wondered something.

ITT, how many people know who David Beckham is? Do they know his name? Why he's famous? How famous is he in America in general and what for? How famous do you think he is outside of America?

I think it might be funny to hear the replies, especially to the last question.

Just put it this way, Among women in this country he is a God and he made Yorke who he is with all those great crosses. Even though he peeked like 7 years ago, he still commands sick respect

Your showdown winnings should be more than your without showdown winnings. One of the big reasons might be, i remember reading your playing rush and pretty much 3betting anything in the BB vs a late postion steal. When your getting called your prop bluffing flop\turn getting called and it's going check check on the river where your losing a lot of $$$$.

Mine are not. Lifetime I'm a huge loser at SD. Luckily I'm a bigger winner without SD. Green line is all that matters.

We all have heard the name, know that he plays soccer and is married to a Spice Girl. The point is that none (almost none) of us have ever seen him play soccer and wouldn't give a wooden nickel to do so.

But WV you have to see that as a problem with the US, Football is a worldwide sport, the only country that gives it no attention is the US. Its like the US saying to the world, **** all of your sports, we'll create our own and play with ourselves, we are better than you

I see no problem with that and I agree with your assessment.

WV's opinion is what I believed most Americans knowledge of Beckham to be.

He's quite possibly the most famous living person in the world. A title such as the Queen of England or the President of the US might be more famous but not as a name.

He is without doubt the most famous athlete of all time. Sure, he's not at the top of his sport any more, I just find it astounding how little America now of him.

Football will forever be the world's sport. Eventually it will be on the same level as American Football and Baseball in America.

The episode of The Simpsons where they watch a football match and riot is really funny but oh so true of Americans opinions. There is nothing wrong with it whatsoever, I'll never say any different, but one day, football will get you :)

The World Cup in brazil in 2014 will be so sick, I'm so going out there for the month it's on, it's the year I graduate from Uni.

The US doesn't pay attention to Cricket either, which I think is the 2nd most watched sport in the world after Football.

American Football developed from Rugby until evolved into the game it is today. Baseball is a bat and ball game with innings just like Cricket and derives from the same source. Basketball is also a US invention. Countries that were occupied by the US like Cuba, The Dominican rpeublic, Japan and Korea play baseball but nearby countries that weren't are into football (Jamaica, Bahamas, etc.). Also Countries that are members of the Commonwealth or were former British Colonies like Australia, new zealand, West Indies, South Africa. india, Pakistan, Kenya, etc. play Cricket and football.

Funny that canada went their own way with football and invented Ice Hockey.

I guess us North Americans are just like that.

I'll find the money, I need a gap year right? Travelling through North and South America before finishing in Brazil for the World Cup sounds like a dream. Obvs won't be able to see every game, it'd cost a shit ton. Hopefully a couple England games, maybe they'll get far or (fingers crossed) to the final.

And **** Russia 2018, should have been England 2018, I wish it was at least :(

I hope you get there though, I need to go see a world cup in it's host country at some point in my life, I think everyone should.

Nothing beats sitting in a pub and watching cricket all day except for going to a match, watching some cricket and getting pissed. Awesome.

Lol really?

Yeah, I mean I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything but I'm very stereotypically American in this regard. I couldn't care less about soccer or how many people watch it around the world. I have no desire to learn the game or to ever watch it. I suppose if my son decides to play it I'll get into it just enough to enjoy watching him play but I'd be amazed if I ever became a follower of it at a higher level.

I don't think this will ever come to pass. People have been predicting this for a long time now and while kids have been playing for ~30 years now the game really hasn't made any inroads to become part of the American culture. Even the kids who play it don't watch it. We'll likely always be a country that pretends to like soccer every 4 years and even then it will be limited because the US team is unlikely to ever win anything. I mean just the fact that you guys know where the next 2 world cup games are going to be held amazes me. I might have known if it was going to be in WV but even if it was elsewhere in the US I would have no idea.

Its really a money thing and also to spread it around. Also they probably got paid to make the decision. Warner got his pockets stuffed with that one.

Weren't there some preliminary games for the 1994 World Cup held in NYC? I'm pretty sure I remember that as I was driving cab there at the time. I remember picking up a beautiful Irish girl and mentioning casually, "There are quite a few of your countrymen over hear for the World Cup".

She replied in this slightly exasperated but mildly amused tone: " yes and I'm afraid they're all trying to stay with me"

As an Irish American whose family has been in the US since the 1860's I always cherish these encounters. I always eschewed the fake Irish Bars of 2nd Ave or Midtown for Smith's @ 44th/ 8th Ave or various places in the Bronx, some of which had Gaelic football club regalia festooned all about. My absolute favorite was Dorney & Malone's at 242nd St & Broadway. That was a bar you could hitch up and if you spoke with the bartender and the locals the right way you could drink for next to nothing. I have a special gift for codging drinks, you know.

It is rather uncommon I guess. When I played 25nl I was positive on both lines but since about 50K hands into 50nl I can't win at SD to save my soul.
