I suppose you have a point WV about how it's failed up to now to capture the American audience, making it unlikely to do so in future. Like I said, I don't care if America does or doesn't like it, there's sports I don't like or watch and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm not the type of guy that says YOU HAVE TO LIKE FOOTBALL I LIKE FOOTBALL WE ARE BETTER THAN YOOOOUUU.

marginal, no offense but soccer will never be big in the U.S...Ya, I know everybody else in the world watches it, but its an american thing to just not give a fu** what the rest of the world thinks about us.
plus, Americans need violent sports and soccer isnt exactly as violent as say american football or hockey. (baseball doesnt count, its our past time)

Let's run up and down the field, and play to a 0 - 0 tie while diving like babies at the slightest contact. I mean I respect how skilled the players are but really watching that sport on TV is so lame. I mean in person at a stadium would be alright just because the fans are so crazy but I couldn't be bothered to watch a game.
I'm from canada btw, so it's not just an American thing. Give me a good FOOTBALL, hockey, basketball, hell even golf match to watch.

I just hope one day that Americans can experience the hysteria and excitement that only the build up and playing of the world cup can bring.
For me, when qualifying ends in like November for the next 6-7 months the world cup fever burns hot. There's nothing else like the greatest show on earth.
Not only that, but for the greatest thing about the world cup is the joy it creates, the sense of pride in our countries the joy of being united to support our team. It's ability to bring nations together to play the beautiful game and to love it together.
Football is so popular in the world because it's fun to play and all you need is something round. You don't even need goals. The joy it can create when a kid can't even afford shoes is something to behold.

Know the name, most everyone does. Know he is married to a spice girl. Know he failed, dramatically, at making, or helping make, soccer more accepted as a "sport" in this country.
OK, I joke, slightly. No one denies soccer is a sport. A sport no one watches or gives a damn about here. There are a few exceptions. I lived in Southern California for 7 years or so. There it has caught on and is a big deal. But, hey, skateboarding is considered a serious sport there, so what does that tell you?
Anyway, after my time in California I moved back to the midwest where soccer is a sport the little ones play when their moms are too afraid they'll get hurt playing real football. Then, they grow up and move into real sports as they progress in school. NOT joking here.

As far as the most famous athlete ever. I doubt it. I believe that every time a question such as this comes up the answer is usually Muhammad Ali. Not a huge fan of boxing either, but certainly much more than I am a fan of soccer.
I don't know how old you are, so I wonder if your age may be skewing your perspective. While it may be fine (though debateable, to say he is the most famous athlete (outside the US, obv.) of your time, or his time, it is a HUGE statement to say he is the most famous athlete EVER. Again, this is NOT my opinion. There have actually been studies,surveys, that sort of thing done on this many times. The answers always come back Muhammad Ali. If you're not old enough to remember his classic bouts with other of the sports greats during boxing's heyday, I imagine it'll be hard for you to understand.
Oh, and I mean worldwide, not just the US. Check up on some of Ali's matches in Africa. Check how revered he still is in many African nations. Will Beckham command that respect a full generation or more after he retires?
As for the part about soccer eventually being on the same level in the US as football and baseball.....Ummm, NO. That will happen about the same time PLO replaces NLHE as the most popular form of poker.

The only reason soccer is so popular worldwide is the fact that people in the poorest countries (most of the world) can play it because it requires just a ball. People in general only like watching sports they know something about, so sports they have experience playing. Thus, the world loves soccer.
Yet us in North America, are fortunate enough to have the means to play sports that require equipment and such. We don't grow up on soccer and even if we play it at recess as kids it's not part of our culture like hockey and other sports.
Basically, I figure that if the world would have grown up with the means to play other sports such as hockey or football then these sports would be much more popular than soccer because they are SOOOOO much less boring. Seriously I know I'm going to get flamed for this but I believe its true.
The world loving soccer has nothing to do with how good of game it is...just with the fact that poor people can play it.

dude, The U.S.A is obviously the best country for baseball and we would completely dominate the stupid "baseball classic" with the other countries if our best players actually felt it was worth their time to play but they dont and we still win w/out our best players.

And how is American football not boring with 5 million stoppages during the game. I mean there is more pausing inbetween plays than there is actually playing.
The world unites when the world cup is going on you cannot deny that. Also, countries like England, germany, all the major Euro countries play football. They have had the money for a long time to play American sports yet they stuck with football and rugby so I think that point is mute.

hockey isnt popular in Africa or poorer nations for the simple fact that there's not ice everywhere for people to play on and it's an expensive sport in comparison to soccer. In Canada, there is, so you grow up on it.
Same reason why baseball is popular in some poorer countries, all you really need is a bat and a ball

Ya, I understand your point, its just a name though....they use to call the NFL "championships" instead of Super Bowl, but they change the name and suddenly everything pre-super bowl doesnt matter anymore /rant
I understand there is fundamental differences between Europe and North America but a big reason (not the only) reason NFL never took on in Europe also has to deal with the fact that it's second and third rate talent, not at the level of the NFL. I would be bored watching former mediocre college players play too

The 3rd division league in England still gets a lot of support even though the play is nothing compared to the top.
