Just start looking at poker as a sport.

Nope, it’s not rocket science, you can be a capable poker player within a couple of months of online play I believe. poker is 90 percent luck, so the skill level is not astronomical.

My experience has been, the longer I play this game and the more I study it, the more I realize how little I know and just how much more there is to learn about this game (especially if I'm hoping to become a good or competent player)

No, you don’t need to be an expert to play poker! Anyone can learn the basics, but getting better takes practice. Start with simple rules and improve over time by learning bluffing, odds, and reading opponents.
