Poker has actually taught me a lot about life - patience, discipline, and emotional control. Has poker changed the way you handle things outside the game?

Absolutely! Poker really does mirror life — it’s all about managing emotions, taking calculated risks, and knowing when to hold on or let go. It’s made me more patient and strategic in real-life decisions too.

Of course, there's no doubt that playing poker has made me more calm in stressful situations.

No gamble no future. You have to gamble with things in the present otherwise your future is broke... take risks and realise outcomes - learn and live with your decisions

I honestly haven't been able to change my behavior in real life. I will make an effort to do so,

Poker has made me a person who no longer gets nervous in line, because I’ve stood patiently for four hours waiting for aces to pay out and still got busted. Actually no, I won't get nervous while standing in line because I will be playing while standing in line. :D

But seriously speaking, it has taught me that sometimes you do everything right and still lose, and sometimes you win even though you don’t deserve it and that is pretty good training for life.

I can really relate to that. Poker has a funny way of teaching you patience the hard way. You learn pretty quickly that you can make the right decision and still lose, and that lesson carries over to real life a lot. It helped me stop reacting emotionally to short-term results and focus more on the process instead of instant outcomes.

Outside the game, I think the biggest change for me was emotional control and discipline. Being able to stay calm after a bad beat at the table makes it easier to handle stress, frustration, or setbacks in everyday situations. Poker doesn’t just train your brain, it trains your mindset, and that’s something you don’t really notice until you’ve been playing for a while.

That separation between making good decisions and getting good outcomes is probably the biggest lesson poker teaches. Once that clicks, it changes how you look at a lot of things outside the game too.

I also like your point about emotional control. Learning to absorb a bad beat without tilting is basically training for real life stress. You cannot control variance, but you can control your reactions and your process. Over time that mindset quietly spills into work, relationships, and decision making in general. Poker sneaks up on you that way.

It's weird but poker taught me to no gambling. Because I gambled one of my big wins and that was the big lesson for me to not gamble anymore.

I wouldn’t say it really changed me in real life. You just adapt to the game by gaining experience from previous sessions, understanding when you need to be patient, when to take risks, not always wait for the perfect hand, and sometimes bluff. The game is the game, and real life is real life.

Absolutely—now I can bluff my way out of doing chores and make my cousins think it’s their idea. Life skill level: expert. 😏

Poker has taught me that sometimes you can make all the right moves and still lose. It’s a great life lesson — you can’t control the outcome, but you can control your actions and how you react. Over time, that mindset helps you stay calm under pressure and make better decisions, both at the table and in real life.
