Do you only play raise or do you usually give a limp?

What is the way you play the most, always limp or just raise your hands?

Limping in poker is usually seen as a weak strategy because it gives up too many advantages.
By just calling the big blind instead of raising, you surrender initiative and allow opponents to dictate the pace of the hand.
You also lose fold equity, since raising can push weaker hands out, while limping invites more players into the pot.
This often leads to multiway pots, which are harder to win and increase variance.
Limping also caps your range, making you predictable and easier to exploit by stronger players who recognize you rarely limp with premium hands.
Over time, this habit becomes a consistent leak in your game, draining chips and reducing your win rate.
That’s why modern poker theory strongly favors open-raising, with limping reserved only for very specific spots like certain small blind situations or unusual tournament dynamics.

Rare exceptions where limping can make sense:
• Small blind vs. big blind – to see a cheap flop and balance ranges.
• Speculative hands – like suited connectors or small pairs in loose games.
• Trap play – occasionally with premium hands to induce raises.
• Tournament spots – short stacks with big antes may limp to conserve chips.

Sometimes it is necessary to play passively, especially when there are weak players at the table.

It's very rare for me to limp if I'm the first to speak, limping is a losing move in the long run, I personally don't like it

Of course, without a doubt, every hand in poker is played individually, and every situation is individual, sometimes you are aggressive, and sometimes passive.

There is no such thing as a poker game. What position do people lose the most money from? Most often, it's the big blind, because it's very difficult to play out of position and make a profit when you have to pay 1 big blind every time. By limping, you're essentially creating a second big blind position.

I don’t see any advantage in limping at the micro-stakes, not even from the small blind. In micro-stakes poker, you win chips by playing aggressively, and you don’t need to bluff. Here’s what you should do: just play the value of your hand. If you have a strong hand, you can bet because the players will call you. If you have a weak hand, don’t bother bluffing — they’ll call you with anything.

So if you try to use a limping strategy, especially from the small blind — a position that already says everything: blind war — you need to be aggressive to take down the pots. There’s no need to get fancy. If you have a strong hand in the small blind, just raise it, because players will show the true strength of their hands. No need to invent anything.

Now, if you move up in stakes, then yes, you need to study a lot more, and maybe incorporating a limping strategy can become interesting. But at the micro-stakes, I don’t see any advantage at all, and I don’t recommend anyone doing it. I don’t do it and I don’t advise anyone to do it — but of course, it’s up to each player.

I prefer to always raise; if I always limp I can be very predictable, while if I raise constantly, my possible hands are more varied.

There is a time and place for every strategy you can think of…limping, continuation bets, squeeze plays…the key is knowing when to use them.

Open limping is the worst play in poker and its even worse with players sitting out.

I do limp sometimes, but I’m trying to cut it down especially in cash games. As I improve, I feel more and more that a clean raise-or-fold approach keeps me out of trouble. Still working on fixing this leak in my game.
