how to bet the size of the pot correctly before the flop

betting the pot

i really dont understand how this works so if the blinds are $20 $10 with no ante and utg bets the pot how is his bet $70 not $30 but then after the flop when the pot is $200 and the first player to act bets pot it is $200 can someone please explain this to me

You're confusing raising pot (making a pot-size raise) with betting pot (making a pot-size bet). If you're betting pot then sure, you bet the amount which is currently in the pot (pot: $200, bet: $200). If you're raising pot (like in an UTG example)...well, first of all: the minimum amount you can raise in NLHE is double the size of the bet. Say the pot is $100, opponent bets $50. You can view your pot-size raise as (either):

a) A minraise (2 * $50) plus the amount which is currently in the pot ($100 + $50) which gives: $250
b) If you were to call his $50 bet, the pot would be: $200. So then to match the pot, you would also have to add...pot to your raise amount, which also gives: $250 ($50 + $200)

Btw, back to UTG. The minimum he is allowed to raise is 2*$20 (2 * BB) which is: $40. The pot is $30 (SB + BB) so the pot size raise is: $70 ($40 + $30).

I'm very sure this may sound like a pretty stupid question but i really have no clue. For example there is $10/$20 blinds and you are utg preflop and you bet the pot how is this $70 not $30 if anyone knows the answer can u please explain

Maybe, its an ante game or ante is included at that level.

Multiply the last bet by 3, and add in whatever else is in the pot.

For the purposes of raising, the pot includes the amount you'd have to put out to call an existing bet.

If you're first to act after the flop, then that amount is zero, which might be where the confusion is coming from.

This is what I was saying in your other thread, but I erased it and just gave you the rule of thumb. 3X the last bet plus whats in the pot.

So our pot bet would be 210 ( 3* 60 = 180... Add in whats left in the pot... 30 and you get 210)

OK, just played Stars Zoom, and with 100/200 a pot bet (using the POT button) is 700.

3x is 600 if first to act, pot button also assumes first to act.

Going to WPN now....

OK, WPN does not have a POT button, and the 3X ends up being 4X per the Stars standard, so if you choose the 3X button it assumes you are calling and then raising 3X. Very old school. If UTG limps, and then I 3x, it is still as if UTG had not bet, and it means call PLUS 3x the bb. Post flop the options change to relative pot size bets, 1/3, 1/2. 2/3 and shove, with no actual POT button.

Point is, thru the years, the sites have seldom standardized this.

There is a difference at stars between the 3X button and the POT bet button. 3X would be 600, and POT would be 700.

Also note that at stars we can all vary how the buttons appear to us. You could for example, have it set at multiples of the small blind rather than the big blind. I don't think that happens at WPN.

Well... Guess that answers your question why a "pot bet" is different on stars than wpn... There isn't a pot button on wpn.
