How important is bankroll management?

If you start with $20, is it a mistake to insert $10 into a money table? I think it's wrong, but how much is it ideal for playing and not depending on the order? is it for 5%, $1 wouldn't it be too little to grow? Or is it ideal not to play for money?

It depends on the type of tournament you play.

Single table SNGs have less variance but also less chance of big wins compared to MTTs with a huge variance but also a huge potential to win.

I made the mistake to play 1$ MTTs with a bankroll of only 10$.

From the poker courses you can take away that you should have about 100 buyins to play SNGs or MTTs (even more).

Also I wouldn't put 50% of my bankroll into a money table. Since you can also loose it all with one all-in.

To have right bankroll is very important!

BR=(D/2m)*ln(1/R)

D - variance
m - win rate
R - risk of ruin (you can chose it)

R=5% or 0.05
ln(1/0.05)=ln20=~3

For example: D=100^2(BB^2)/100hands=10000
m=7.5BB/100hands

BR=[10000/(2*7.5)]*3=2000BB or 20 stacks.

If you want to have risk of ruin 1%, then R=0.01
ln(1/R)=ln100=4.605

BR=[10000/(2*7.5)]*4.605=3070BB or ~31 stacks.

Bank Roll Management or BRM, is the most important aspect of poker to get right.

For tournaments, without any sort of knowledge of game selection/style/etc. it is easy to suggest the 100 buy in rule. So you really can't "start" with $20, because even with $100 I would suggest sticking with $1 games.

Remember, this is a conservative general suggestion. As you gain experience, you should feel confident in taking more shots if climbing the stakes is what you desire.

It as much in poker depends.....on.....
which type of game you play ( poker has cash games, tournaments sit and goes etc. and they are in NLH, PLO, LH, stud etc. and then you have to set a budget on how much you wil spend on playing, as with any other past / fun time spending. and that is the most importent aspect.

BRM is a big part of the game and it makes it a challenge set you goal, and set if you can fulfil it.

I think that bankroll management is important in any field of activity. whether you're a poker player or a housewife, bankroll management is in your life, even if you don't know what it is. I think that to play at any level you need to have 400 buyins.

There is nothing wrong with playing real money games as long as it is the right buy-in based on your bankroll. I am suggesting $0.10 - $0.20 MTTs. This would give you ample opportunity to play and build your bankroll. You also have many freeroll tournaments as a member of Cards Chat.

Take your time to play good poker and learn the ropes. If you do not follow proper bankroll management, it does not matter if you have $100.00 or $100, 000 - chances are you will go broke if playing without 100+ buy-ins in MTT and S'nGs. I am a great example of this!

This is a fun game that is easy to learn and takes a lifetime to master. So be gentle with yourself.

How much to risk depend on how much one can win.

For average, i win a hand in five hands, then 20% is the what i can risk one time.

if you have a lot of money, and like to spend it, play just for fun. You don't need bankroll control, now if you don't have a lot of money you can't spend it all on a single tournament, or on a single table, so make a bankroll control

You definitely don't need 100 (or 200) buyins to play MTT's online. This is a 'suggestion' for players who are hoping to not be depositing. If I had only $20 in my account I am certain I would be playing $2 - $5 games (MTT). What difference does it make if you bust your $20 bankroll?? Just make another deposit.

If you're planning on maintaining or building a bankroll, then you should stick to 100 to 200buyins for large field mtt's. In the micros I feel you can go with 100 because it is so soft. Another thing to keep in mind, it doesn't matter how many buyins you have in your bankroll if you're not a winning player.

I usually use the 100x buy in rule, but I feel more comfortable to play with 200x buy in at least. In your case with $20 buy in, you should play $0.20 sit'gos or MTT's, but it's not easy to find MTT's of this value. I would try to start with a bigger bankroll, if you don't want to deposit, I would still play freerolls and build a more comfortable bankroll to start.

This depends on the individual. I mean if you play for fun you can play whatever you want but apparently we don't risk money we can't afford to lose!
I belong to the side who don't want to deposit to the site so personally I have a super strict management but this is me.

There are many good posts here to have a good idea what is a good bankroll management , my opinion though , especially for MTT players , is to never forget that there is the luck element so we must be prepared!!!

Absolutely agree. Its bordering on silly to talk about a 20$ deposit as a "bankroll", because it really should not be a big problem to deposit another 20$, if you lose the first. I guess, it is possible to deposit 20$ and hope to not be redepositing, but you will be limited to playing games like 25c SnGs, and it will take a long time to reach even the first 100$. Time thats better spend doing something else, unless you are completely new to poker and want to practice as cheaply as possible. But in that case it makes no sense to talk about "bankroll", because as you say, only winning players can have a bankroll. Losing players can only have a budget, which is something entirely different.

If you are a recreational player then bankroll management is not important.

If you are ok with reloading money to your account then bankroll management is not important.

But if you can't or don't want to add more money to your poker account and you want to continue to play poker - then yes playing $1 or $2 at a time is what you have to do with a $20 bankroll.
