For everyone who is starting in poker, there is a lot of discussion about the combos that can be formed or about the strongest starting hands to play, but very little is said about table position, and many beginners do not see its real importance or do not give it the attention it deserves.
Being in a good position at the table means that we will act last, which gives us clues about what possible cards our opponents might have. We know, for example, that having a pair in hand is a good starting hand. However, if we are on the button and some opponents enter the pot with an open raise, 3-bet, 4-bet, or shove, we may consider that lower pocket pairs might not be strong enough to play in that particular hand.
Position also allows us to play weaker hands. If we are closer to the end of the table and the action reaches us with folds, it allows us to open with some hands that we normally would not open with an open raise. Sometimes we can win the hand right at that moment, or we can remain in position to play post-flop. Since approximately 67% of the time we do not hit either of our cards on the flop, being in position often means that our c-bet will get through, allowing us to win the pot without even needing to hit any combo.
