I’ve been thinking about what makes a truly strong poker player. It’s not just knowing ranges or GTO — there’s a set of skills and personal qualities that separate good players from great ones.

For example:

Emotional control — avoiding tilt and managing fear/greed.

Discipline — sticking to a plan even when the hand is tempting.

Analytical thinking — reading opponents, adjusting strategy, understanding ranges and bet sizing.

Patience and timing — knowing when to wait and when to act.

Self-awareness and adaptability — recognizing your own mistakes and evolving.

In your opinion, which skills or qualities are the most decisive for long-term success? What separates a great player from an average one?

Also, feel free to share your top qualities — the ones you are striving to develop, actively working on, or have already acquired.

If you can master it and truly have the qualities you mentioned, then you're a great player! But few can resist the temptation and end up breaking those principles — myself included. I know them, I often respect them, but I can't always stick to them. And if I could, maybe I’d become a great player too.

I'm not the best either. More precisely, I'm not the best at anything. I'm just working towards improvement, and I think I'm improving little by little, especially in discipline and analytics.

Yeah I would say emotional control is a big one. It’s really the only thing you can control in poker.
