Need an explanation on "using hand ranges"

Okay, so I know how to put someone on a range, as I get information etc, but the other day I heard someone say "He uses the top %60 of his range"...

What does this mean when people say that kind of stuff? In regards to pushing/shoving or just general betting etc.
How do you put someone on %50 of their range etc? This seems hugely advanced in my eyes but still curious.

You calculate the equity of each combination in that range, sort them (combinations) in descending order (according to their equities) and then you take top X% of combinations from that list. Equity distribution graphs are useful for that kind of stuff, Flopzilla used to have an ability to create them as far as I remember.

As an expression "60% of his range" is nonsense. A players range is the range of hands they play. Therefore, as soon as you talk about them playing 60% of that, then that 60% becomes their range.

It is, however, quite reasonable to say that they take a specific action with 60% of their range. e.g. He/She c-bets 60% of their range; or they raise with 60% of their range.

Alternatively, saying that they play 60% of hands is quite a reasonable statement.

The player may have been stating he used the top 60% of another players assumed range as a basis to to make a decision in a particular situation. Maybe like he is ahead of 40% of the range and has correct odds vs the top 60% of the players range for example, or maybe he is going to represent or bluff based on the board and the top 60% of the players range when he believes the board did not help the top 60% his opponents range. It could mean a lot of things but I would have to hear exactly what he said and in context or have the entire conversation written down verbatim not just a little snippet to really know what he meant because he could have meant something basic or he could have been saying something else a little more complicated. But it is always nice to overhear players on break at your tournament table talking, many times you will hear someone say something that leads you to believe they are decent and many times you will hear someone say something that is sooooooooooo far wrong that you are all over them at the table when you get a chance to play vs them :) So I am a listener not a talker at the poker room on and off the table.

Okay this makes sense! Unfortunately I can only quote what I heard, which was that little snippet!

I'm trying to grasp my head around it, it seems a bit more advanced to say someone uses %60 of their range in this situation or that situation etc, definately sometihng I need to practice in the long run!
