This is one of the most common debates in poker: is poker mainly a game of skill or a game of luck?
In the short term, luck definitely plays a role. A player can win or lose a hand because of the cards that appear on the board.
However, in the long run, skill becomes much more important. Players who consistently make better decisions tend to achieve better results over time.
Understanding strategy, reading opponents, and managing your bankroll are all skills that can give players a strong advantage.
What do you think: is poker mostly skill, luck, or a mix of both?

It’s a mix of both, but in the long run skill matters much more than luck. Good players make better decisions over time.

It's what you said. It's primarily skill for the long-term, but for the short-term, it can greatly be luck. Perhaps the problem is that the long-term is typically much longer than most people expect it to be and that short-term "luck" is blamed too often for things which have nothing to do with luck. It wasn't "unlucky" that you lost with AK. You over-valued your hand against your opponent's range of only AA ;)

I think poker is a mix of both skill and luck.

In the short term, luck definitely plays a big role. Anyone can win a hand or even a session if the cards run their way.

But in the long run, skill matters much more. Players who make better decisions, understand strategy, and manage their bankroll well will usually come out ahead over time.

So luck affects the results in the short term, but skill is what separates winning players from losing players in the long run. ;)

I agree with that. In the short term, luck can definitely influence the outcome of a hand or even an entire session. Bad beats and good runs happen to everyone.

But in the long run, skill becomes the most important factor. Players who consistently make better decisions, manage their bankroll well, and stay disciplined will usually come out ahead over time.

That’s what makes poker so interesting—it has elements of luck, but strong strategy and good decision-making are what really separate winning players from the rest.

Haha, I see what you mean! 😄 In some sessions, it really feels like that, especially when the cards just don’t go your way.
But over the long run, skill definitely has more weight than that. Knowing when to fold, how to read opponents, and managing your bankroll consistently is what separates winning players from those who just get lucky once in a while.
Still, we can all agree that sometimes luck can make poker feel like a rollercoaster! 🎢

Exactly! That’s a perfect way to put it. In the short term, variance can make it feel like luck is everything, but over the long term, decisions and skill are what truly matter.

And you’re right about AK—losing with it isn’t “unlucky” if you’re up against AA. It’s just part of understanding ranges and probabilities. Many players confuse bad outcomes with bad luck, when in reality it’s just the nature of the game.

The key is to keep making the correct decisions consistently, because over time, skill always wins over variance.

Absolutely, that’s a great way to summarize it! 😉
Short-term variance can make poker feel unpredictable, and anyone can get lucky for a session or two. But over time, consistent decision-making, understanding ranges, adjusting to opponents, and proper bankroll management are what really make the difference.
That’s why even the best players sometimes lose small sessions—but their skill ensures they stay profitable in the long run. Luck may decide a single hand, but skill decides your overall success.

My opinion is that poker is primarily a game of chance. Especially online poker. Here I think the ratio is 70/30 in favor of luck, against knowledge. In live poker, the importance of knowledge and experience is slightly greater.

I agree with you, poker depends much more on skill than luck, and that's why we always have professional poker players coming to the big tournaments.
