(I'm currently in the process of writing a poker-book/guide, and the following is an excerpt from my introduction. Enjoy!)

To be, or not to be (a poker-player)?

Before we get into observations and strategies, I think it's important to highlight some of the realism's regarding long-term poker playing. Most players, specifically newer ones, tend to glorify the poker experience (I know I did.) Often these new players, when considering the game of poker, will conjure-up a mental picture of a well-dressed man, sitting behind a mountain of chips, staring intently into the eyes of his opponent. Yet, most of the time, this couldn't be further from the truth. Instead, you'll be sitting in an old chair, for long periods of time, watching and waiting patiently for the right moment. Furthermore, regardless of how talented and skilled you become, there is no guarantee that at the end of the day you'll be winning; and, very few things sap your soul like grinding out an eighteen hour poker session, only to lose substantial winnings in the last hour to a bad-beat. Hence, life-long moments of glory are usually seldom in comparison to the unpleasant realities, but I suppose that could be said about any type of employment. Just don't be mistaken, playing poker requires hard-work, effort, patience, and emotional-control. After all, we're not James Bond, and this isn't Casino Royale.

So, why do I bring this all up? Just to be a “Debbie-Downer?” Absolutely not. I mention this for one reason in particular: if you don't love the journey of playing poker, the good and the bad, it's doubtful you'll maintain the necessary fortitude it requires to be a professional poker player. Consequently, those who are motivated solely by the thought of easy money, or being their own boss, will most likely fall by the wayside, moved aside by those who have real passion for poker. Passion is one of the most powerful motivating tools we have as human-beings, perhaps only second to fear, and without it your poker-journey might not bear fruit.

like anything in life, you don't know what it is about until you try it. So if you glorify poker and don't put in the time, you probably won't make it too far.

At least writing poker books is more lucrative than being a poker loser all you need will be finding an Editor a Publisher and a lot of players that will buy it.

I don't think that Books are old fashioned (I love reading books and smelling the old papers as well as the fresh printed ones) but nowadays Readers are not that much due to the new Internet tendancies.

That's to say may be it's better starting a Blog and Coaching some players online.

Good luck

The lifestyle you have as a poker pro is up to each individual. Like me I dont want to be a famous poker pro. I want to be the unknown Semi poker pro, just grinding. I have another business that more than covers expenses and pretty much takes little time for me. (maybe on average 1 hr a day)

Also if you have played poker for any length of time you know that Narrative of glamor really is a dime a dozen. Yes Helmouth, Kid Poker, ect live that life but I dont want that life. I want the life I can walk into the card room and nobody really knows me or my abilities.

I have already decided for myself that poker is just entertainment for me. To pursue poker as his job, which will make for me profit is just not for me. At least the next 10 years!

I don't want to become a professional poker player, I want to become rich out of a sudden.
As soon as that happens, I won't have time to play poker, I'm gonna spend money without variance...:2in1:

I like to genuine gamble with MTT that have a big guarantee. Cash games are a grind. That being said being a poker pro is a type of hell with many obstacles especially a revenue based, high frequency, opportunity costing ,percentage based rake.

So too it is impossible, it is necessary to dispose of money with mind, to make it so that they become even more, and not to waste what it is.

How is that not realistic??? Have you seen EPT Barcelona? A noname went back to poland with 800.000 US$, that's rich for me, and he won a TICKET!!!
I won 3 tickets in the last year for 1 Million $ Tourneys, had badluck with nutsflush into 44 FH and stuff, but I didn't make mistakes. Just a littbe bit more luck in the special moments and it's done!!!
I will make it REAL:icon_tong

Another year has passed, and my opinion is already changing. I believe that making a living as a poker player is not as unfeasible as I thought before.

You are probably a professional player if you have enough knowledge to write a book for other players. How many years of experience do you have, and what are your most notable victories?
Before reading your book, it would be interesting to know the answers to these questions.

I don't want to be a professional poker player. I love to play the game, but relying on poker to sustain a living would be too stressful and remove the fun from the game for me.

Poker is passion and fun

"Passion is one of the most powerful motivational tools we have as human beings, perhaps second only to fear, and without it your poker journey may not bear fruit"

As you mentioned, the passion for poker is the tool that still motivates you to play this great sport.:jd4:

Poker

Based on the number of tournaments played in different poker disciplines and the thousands of hands played, I think I have already become a professional player.

The last and only real rapper.... 2pac....

Even if you are down in the sh*t, you had to do the same...

get out from prison world highly intelligent very civilizied humanoid world, if you can... and problem solved...

People have no idea anyway about number, money, system. Compare to different things in this fake world all pro poker players are very poor, and the money what circulating in poker just cents...... but if they brainwash/plant the 'facts' enough long, lifetime 24/7 almost everybody believe in it, accept as fact, reality.....

Strangely, the money printer owners never have to look over their shoulder.... why is that:confused:

Anyway, it was a 3 years old thread, who and why digs it out... and no post writers recognize it....

Get your money what gives the illusion of freedom, however you want. Otherwise, everything is about that.

Poker will remain entertainment for me. Since there is an element of luck in poker, I think you shouldn't make it a source of income.
