Position is one of the biggest advantages a player can have at the table.
Being in late position allows you to see how your opponents act before you make your decision. This gives you more information and often lets you play a wider range of hands profitably.

Many new players underestimate how powerful position really is. In fact, sometimes position can be more important than the actual cards you are holding.

There is a lot of truth in this observation, to be vigilant and learn to use positions for profitable decision-making! salutes

i still struggle with expanding my range on the button. I also struggle with being TOO aggressive in this position early instead of letting the money trickle in and the pot build. i see free blinds and get greedy

I guess the idea is that in late position you get to see everyone's action before deciding your own. If an early position raises, you can put them on a range of hands ( for instance AK suited or pocket pairs). So you can call wider and try to crack their hand. If there are a bunch of limpers you can try to play aggressively any two and see a flop. If there's no action, you can attack the blinds. A wide range of possibilities.

Position in poker is one of the most powerful strategic advantages a player can have, often more valuable than the strength of the cards themselves. Acting later in a hand means you get to see how opponents behave before making your own decision, allowing you to gather extra information about their hand strength, betting patterns, and intentions. This control lets you play more hands profitably in late position while tightening up in early position where you act first with little information. Being “in position” also makes bluffing more effective and helps you extract more value from strong hands. Ultimately, mastering positional awareness is a cornerstone of winning poker.

Yes, definitely! Particularly for newer players who may not have a complete understanding of its value, position is a game changer. You have the benefit of seeing how your opponents play their hands when you are in late position, which provides vital information. This gives you the ability to make better judgments and even increase your hand range in a way that is beneficial to you. A strong starting hand is essential, but knowing where you are in relation to your opponents is frequently more important. A player in late position is better able to manage the pot, bluff more successfully, and avoid making expensive blunders. In many cases, it’s the difference between a winning and losing strategy. Position is truly everything! (y)

Hi
Position is definitely important. But in my opinion, a player's ability to assess the situation as a whole, taking into account other factors such as hand strength, stack size, tournament stage, and opponents' playing style, is more important. If you take a comprehensive approach to assessment, it will definitely give you good results. If you focus only on position and do not take other factors into account, you will not have an advantage.

MVery good observation, sometimes just being in position and betting even with nothing makes the villain fold

“In poker, position is power. When you’ve got position, play more hands and apply more pressure before and after the flop.” - Daniel Negreanu, and almost every poker player.

I've heard about this for decades. You are in late position calling a raise with a pair of 8s. The flop comes AJ9; the raiser makes a big continuation bet and everyone folds to you. You fold, the raiser turns over a pair of 5s. So much for the advantage of position.

Of course, position is too important a part of the game to be underestimated. Especially in heads-up! Of course, if a player has studied your strategy and playing style in position, he will be able to make things difficult for you. But to do that, he needs to understand the psychology of the game.

You're right, learning to play with position gives you a lot of advantage in some hands.

Position is one of the most important concepts in poker, yet it’s often overlooked by beginners. Being 'in position'—acting after your opponents—gives you a huge informational advantage. You get to see how they act before making your decision, which helps you control the size of the pot, choose when to bluff, and make more informed calls or folds. Conversely, being 'out of position' forces you to act with less information, making even strong hands harder to play correctly. Mastering position is not just about where you sit; it’s about understanding timing, predicting opponent behavior, and using every decision to maximize long-term value. In many ways, it’s the backbone of strategic poker.

Position in tournament or on table is one of many things to take into account during a game.

Totally agree! 🙂 When I first started, I didn’t really value position that much and played my cards “as is.” Over time I realized how huge the edge is when you act last — you can control pot size, apply pressure, or just take a cheap showdown. It’s amazing how much wider you can profitably open from the button compared to early position.
