Why do people bluff 72 off?

I have never understood why people call preflop with 72 off to try to win pots it just seems like a risk that you don not need to take

It feels extremely cool to take a pot with 72 offsuit. Other than that - I do not see a reason.

Its an ego thing. I told my son only egomaniacs play 72 outside of the blinds.

I think it is simply because 7-2 offsuit is the stereotypical example of a "trash hand" and it is just someone having fun with the situation by saying: "look, I can play anything!"

It is obviously not the inherent value in 7-2 here; let us compare this trash hand to a similiar one like 8-3 offsuit. How many people will continue bluffing with this hand? A lot less probably. Why? It is about just as bad of a starting hand with similar math to improve. It has more to do with psychology and the person having fun than it does anything from an objective standpoint.

you can show your bluff with any hand - just preflop this is the weakest hand, and here are some who indulge their pride

You want to be caught in a bluff, (or rather the idea of getting hand caught trying to snake chips) so you can use your other information to pull off a real bluff down the line. If you are going to bluff, and "want" to get caught, 72 is the best hand to do it, it makes everyone think you are bluffing with rags later (even) when you really have a premium or close to premium hand. IMO that is why...

For fun and sometimes to be able to show the bluff, if it works. Maybe they have watched TV-poker or streams, where the 72 game was on. The 72 game mean, that whenever someone wins a pot with 72 and show his hand, the other players each need to pay him a certain amount.

Does anyone remember when they played it (7-2 game) on High Stakes Poker, and then they made it a thing on Absolute Poker? I used to love those tables, despite the fact that I never once made any moves with 7-2. I loved those tables because the others would be playing so horribly trying to get the bonus that they gave whole stacks away.

Bluffing 72 off

People do it to try and get brownie point to show how good they are, but it can backfire when you runderstand into a hand.

I think it's because 72 was one day called the worst starting hand on poker and if you could win with this hand you're a good player. I fold my 72s 99% of the times.
