Poker between friends: What is and is not acceptable?

You take a good friend with you to a casino. The casino is about a - hour drive from home and you are your friend's only ride. You end up being seated at the same $2-$5 cash table.

About two hours into the game, you have almost doubled your stack! You friend isn't doing nearly as well. He is on his 3rd buy-in and drunk. To make matters worse, the competitiveness he has always had is kicking in and every time you (and it seems to be only you) have a hand and raise, he shoves. Considering the situation, you end up folding three or four times, and your game starts to be affected. This isn't fun anymore.

You decide it's time to leave, but your friend absolutely refuses. What would you do in this situation?

Leave the table if it is not fun any longer, a friend should accept this.

I've been a DJ for over 30 years and I'll be straight up, I don't really like drunks. I've seen it all. Even the funny drunk gets tiresome very quickly.

I just don't have friends who would display that kind of behaviour.

To try to answer the question though, I'd wait until I got something like AA, KK, QQ and call his raise with a re-raise and put him (or her) all in for all of their chips. Once they had lost their chips, they will continue to be obnoxious until the casino staff call the cops. After continuing to be obnoxious to the cops they then get arrested and spend a night in the pen and wake up penniless and with a banging headache.

Being a good friend, I will collect them from jail of course, the day after. But I will refuse to turn down the loud music in my car which is exacerbating their hangover.

This question (or more precisely my answer) would be purely hypothetical.

Why?

Because I would never take a friend with me to a LIVE poker Cash Game since it was 100% work for me (so it would only be a distraction unless I planned to collude which I obviously won't do - but I could be accused of it in an "underground club" and that can be very dangerous).

If I play along and answer: I would tell him to take a long break and sober up or he has to get home another way than in my car.

Not so much because he makes it difficult to play him (because I take his money a great percentage of the time when I get a good hand) but because he takes away some of the play I want to do against the rest of the table.

Plus it's bad manners getting that drunk at my workplace.

I aint answering this used to meet up a guy got drunk on boat was a mess...so ya above dont take friends to poker sessions can ruin your winning run....Anyway i thought the ?? was gonna be poker and friends what is crossing the line well me 17 playing a mexican family in neighborhood 7 peeps so me against seven....I wound up taking them for about 2k....the funny part is that one signed over a paycheck hadnt got yet for the next week when i had a king high str8 flush to their low end str8 flush lol....anyway they had been told by dad who was in mexico to paint the house that week...so they only had some flourescent green paint that glowed in the dark they became the most famous house in neighborhood i kinda didnt like self for it haha but everytime i ever walked by i had a nice laugh....

I think, the person, who has the car, has every right to determine, when its time to leave. So I would tell my friend, that I am going home now, and if he wants to stay, he need to find another mode of transport. The question is very hypothetical for me as someone living in Sweden, since we have public transport, and a casino would typically be located in or near a major city. Moreover having had this kind of experience I would never bring him to a casino again.

If I went to a casino with a friend, I would try not to end up at the same table with him, because any outcome of the competition would lead to a deterioration in the relationship.

The situation should be avoided to begin with. If I knew that the friend has a history of competitiveness against me I wouldn't even take him to a casino.
But I know myself, so I know that I wouldn't ever even become friends with such an individual.

So the answer is N/A.

I have gone to a casino several times with a friend 90 minutes away from my home. Before we go, we always set a time to leave. If something would happen and one of us needed to go, we agreed to always leave together. I think it's smart to plan ahead.

In this situation I would do my best to get him to leave sooner than later. I would tell him I would need to leave in one hour. This would hopefully allow his sometime to play and realize it was time to go. I would go find a Starbucks or something and get a coffee and read for a while.

Would I go back with this player, no I would not after this incident.

I can sympathise with you as I have also been in similar situations, only I was always the driver, and it's no fun when you stick to tea and coffee while they get sozzled. A few times I arranged to sleep overnight and stay in a hotel but it still didn't put them off. Drink Driving has always been one of my pet hates and I wouldn't travel with anyone that did.
The biggest loser's are usually the ones who drink too much, that's why many casinos offer free drinks. But when it comes to Poker there are no Friends sat at my table, they are all treated as the enemy and I tell them from the start, I don't take Prisoners, everybody I am up against is a target.
Maybe that's why I don't have many Friends who play Poker.

I would pour my friend another drink and just wait for him to lose all his money and give it to me. The next day, I would buy his medicine (beer) and we would get better together.

I would tell him:

"Sure u can stay, totally up to u! im sure there is a taxi or some other kind of transportation that will bring u home safely. See ya!"

But i dont play in live cardrooms nor do i hang around with such people anymore.

I would tell him to find another way home. Just because he came with me by his choice, DOES NOT mean he decides when to leave. It's HIS CHOICE whether he stays or leaves with me, Next time he can find another way. Uh, well there will be no next time. I didn't sign up to babysit his drunken ass.

was told my answer was not good enough well we was on a boat and couldnt drown the man but you know lol...the thoughts yes got drunk got sea sick wouldnt go in on next boat...so i had to baby sit a drunk all day like 8 hours....i was done with him in first hour....so ya never again....i made 120 that day usually on boats my average was around 480 per 3 hours.....so ya was upset wasted day...think actually won like 280 and lost 160 babysitting eating and playing slots which dont really do much of....he was drunk so they were happy to keep even being sick cause could try to take advantage of him etc...sad

p.s. if coulda left would have...had friend one time pick up drugs after we were doing an event downtown so i left him in another city for putting me in that situation...its hard decision and can lose a friend this way but sometimes you have to be about what is safe and right for you.

Just a couple of precisions:

. This question is based on real facts, and it happened at the Mazagan.
. There are also different means of "public transport" in Morocco and most casinos are located in big cities.
. But Mazagan Beach-Golf-Resort is located on a beautiful private beach about 15 to 20 Kms from the nearest city.
. No public transportation of any sort is available (Not intended for everyone).
. If someone gets stuck there, his only possibility is to ask "a stranger" for a ride or hitch-hike. Tough tasks being drunk.

In order to participate in this topic, I have to say what I really did as the story did happen in real life (2011).
I told him nicely that I will be waiting in the car for an hour, then leave if he didn't show up. Lucky him, I was asleep when he woke me up 3 hours later, at dawn. It was not a pleasant ride back home by any means, but I've never done anything again with him till today. He ended up leaving me alone after I ignored his phone calls.

And between that and the main entrance, there's a long double way on which you could probably land your jet

I would let my friend know that I am no longer having fun and want to leave. I would let them know that if they are ready to go, I will drive them home. If they are not ready to go, then they can find their own ride home. Sorry but I am not their mother and am not responsible for them.

We going to stop playing poker and start drinking together - but our next trip to casino, there is no next time...😁

Given the kind of friends I have, I would have to fight with them to convince them of anything. My friends usually gamble down to the last cent. It's almost impossible to convince any of my friends with words. Therefore, in such a situation, all I could theoretically do is either win all the money from my friend or lose it to him

Since I cannot convince the friend just yet to leave then I have to wait for him. Perhaps just play in another table, get some drinks in the bar, or just rest in the car. My friends & I have been drunk many times in different places & we just don't abandon each other. They don't leave me behind & I don't leave 'em behind. Its just the way it is.
