Question about mucking a hand in live poker

Yo guys

I got a question when it comes to the rules of live poker.

Let's say we are on the river heads up, im in position. The player bets, i call and he' s trying to muck his hand. Do i have a right to ask the dealer to show me his hand? I mean for me that would be logical, i paid his bet and i want to see his hand.

anyone got any idea?

You most definitely can ask to see his cards. Most people get testy about things like that though. I would say if it is really important to you to get a read on the person then ask to see them. He may complain about it, but that may not matter depending on your disposition.

At my casino you have the right to see them but, I very rarely ask, if they are flipped over before being mucked they are live and can win the pot. I usually let a bluffer lose with a little dignity but, I guess you could argue that you're losing information that you paid for.

As you never really received much clarity on this issue, I have decided to necro-bump your thread.

The answer here is 'yes and no'.

Technically, 'yes'; as the caller- you get to show your cards after the aggressor.

However in practice/etiquette, 'no'; the aggressor concedes that your call means they have lost the hand, muck (often accompanied by GC or NH) and surrender the pot to you without showing down.

You will frequently see this 'etiquette liberty' extended between pro players.

You will rarely (if ever) see a pro player demanding mucked cards to be tabled because they called a bet and the opponent tried to muck... :wink:

Of course you can ask for it. It's not forbidden. But as practice shows, most likely you will be refused. The opponent is absolutely not obliged to do this.

Say you've seen a player do it before numerous times, you get a strong read they are bluffing the river, can you make a bluff call hoping they muck the marginally better hand??? Haha
This would be truly spectacular. I wonder if it has ever been done and somehow filmed. Can't imagine for 1 minute its a long term winning play, but would be pretty cool!

Actually i've this once on some pokerstars live tournament, unfortunatelly i dont remember the situation, a guy oop called all the streets with J high and the agressor mucked the K high hand on the river, that was like really "wow" for me.

In my opinion, there are much more chances to lose a bad hand in live poker than playing online, since playing at a live table you have the opportunity to follow the gestures and facial expressions of your opponents, which cannot be done in online poker

Cards are revealed only when opponents go to Alliyin, and usually the losing hand is discarded without being shown because there is no need to show your cards.

I think it's not worth asking to show discarded cards. Firstly, whether the player is lying will show them, and secondly, often the players themselves take the initiative and show what they played with. I think this is a noble gesture. Although, if you think about it, maybe this is their strategy.

Good question, If the player mucks his hand he is forfeiting you just have to assume he was bluffing. You can check house rules, some case they may say he has to show but I do not think so.

Action: Hero Calls: All in heads up no more action

Tournament.. do not show until opponent shows ( both need to show to avoid collusion)

Cash: do not show your hand until the villain shows , then you have the right to muck or show.
