I have been following the news surrounding the FBI gambling operation and underground poker games have apparently been scamming players with methods from a James Bond movie!

The part about card reading contact lenses is especially interesting to me.

I’ve always said that wherever there is money cheats and scammers will be close by and it’s just part of being a poker player, hopefully this is not widespread yet and can be contained.

Yup there is more I saw someone hack a shuffling machine in a way that you can arrange a deck in a way that you always win the hand, no matter where you cut the deck. I can link the video if you like, but ill need to look it up.

Probably impossible to do in a real casino, but in a private or homegame it's possible to pull off.

Yup, this is a good story. Apparently the investigation has been going on for years. Im sure there's a lot of juicy details yet to come.

Much of this went down in NYC where there's no legal card room or casino that spreads poker within 80 miles. I think Parx is the closest. This is the inevitable consequence of banning or over regulating activities that the government has no business interfering with. Black markets and organized crime will always be there to fill the void.

I've been working in nyc for the past few months and have tried to get into a game at some of the private clubs. I might reconsider that now, even if they don't get shut down.

If there is money on the table then someone is looking for an angle or advantage to get it.

That's why unless its a serious regulated live table then you're at risk.

Online- black friday and all the scandals.

Live stuff, you don't need this recent cheating stuff but go back and read about the "stories" of Doyle B and the old timers playing "home games" in Texas worried about getting robbed or cheated.

Its always going on, be aware and not ignorant of whats going on.

Banned from poker to all those players who cheat, only that would stop it

I would be too afraid to play at a private game…I’m happy with playing live poker when I am on vacation, in reputable establishments like Las Vegas casinos.

It’s wild, but not surprising. Wherever there’s serious money, people will always try to gain an edge—legal or not. The card-reading contact lens stuff sounds straight out of a movie, but it’s a reminder that live poker security really matters, especially in underground games with no oversight.
That said, I don’t think this kind of tech-based cheating is widespread yet. It’s expensive, risky, and hard to scale. Still, it reinforces why regulated rooms, cameras, dealers, and clear procedures are so important. As players, the best defense is awareness: avoiding shady games, watching for unusual behavior, and trusting your instincts. Poker will always attract cheats—but strong safeguards can keep them in check.
