Hi Guys

Currently I'm trying to decide which modality of poker is better for me to make some extra cash at the current moment

As I said in a different thread, I'm enrolled in medical school, and it obviously takes a huge amount of my time (So basically no MTTs)

I've played cash and SNG in the past (more SNG), so experience won't be a huge factor

Considering my situation (not much time to play) and all other variables (variance, volume, etc) what modality do you guys think i should focus on?

Would love to hear your thoughts:)

If you dont have time for SNG's, then of course you should play cash games, but if you have time for SNG's i would recommend it.

You should play which ever one you play better. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. You are the only one that knows what is best for you.

Which one do you enjoy more and which one are you better at?

I never really understood why people ask a question like this, it's kind of like asking someone else what career path you should take.

The upside in cash games is significantly higher, if you put in enough work you could sit down and crush NL10K tables where as SNG's max out at a much lower buy-in. Either way it's going to take a reasonable amount of work to get to the point where can consistently make reasonable money.

My advice would be if you're profitable at one keep playing that as it will provide you an opportunity to make the most amount of money in the least amount of time, but if I had a thread like this and everyone told me to play SNG's I would still end up playing cash games because it's what I enjoy the most

These are the decisions that make me smile in the morning. What to do, what to do... sharkscope used to have a "fish-finder" that helped you find easy-pickens at online tables. I don't know if they still have that feature but that was what got me into playing sng's rather than ring-games. I think it's because I prefer the elimination method when it comes to felting players. There's something about it that pleases me.

Personally, due to the situation of your lack of time to dedicate to MTT, if it would be more profitable for you to opt for S&G, they are more profitable for you at this time and more if you already have experience in them.

in advance I wish you much success in your future games

I think it depends on your skill set and what works better for you, personally I play cash games and I think there is more money to be made there, as well as complete flexibility in scheduling(y)

For sure SNG 9p, because we were able to better study our opponents and have more chances of winning.

I would think with limited time cash would be the way to go as it gives you the ability to start and stop whenever you want or need to. That's why I play cash currently. I also win more playing cash compared to MTT's...but I do enjoy playing MTT's more then cash. I still play a MTT now and again and when I do I make a deposit to cover it. I don't take it from my cash bankroll.

With that said don't be afraid to try both and see what you're better at.

Cheers!!!

It's up to you to decide where you get more, of course, cash games will be the fastest, but you can also lose money there quickly. So choose where you are better at it, not the speed of earnings

If I were to choose for myself, I would give preference to SNG tournaments. But I have reasons for this. Question are individual, many factors need to be taken into account, and therefore only you can make the right choice for yourself.

Exactly. Its all down to personal preference and to some extend also, which games even run on a certain site.

This is true, but SnGs are a better preparation for MTTs, which in my opinion is the game format with the most upside potential and future in online poker. In theory NL10k tables do still exist on PokerStars and for that matter NL20k and NL40k as well. But these games rarely run. Right now there is action on a single NL2k table as well as five NL500 tables, so this is the highest, you can actually play.

And "crushing" those games is mostly a distant dream, since the competition is extremely hard. I have seen articles in another poker forum claiming, that on GG Poker the only long term winners in high stakes cash games are their own site sponsored pros. And these only win due to getting an extra favourable rake-back deal.

I think, OP should try both. Maybe 3 month playing cash games and then 3 month playing SnGs. And then pick the format he enjoy most.

I think it would be easier to grab money with SNGs. You can profile your opponents much better than in cash games IMO.

I personally prefer SnG over Cash games, though they last a bit longer. But really, it's different for everyone, so you should try out both and then decide what fits you better. Some 9-player SnGs are less than an hour.

My sentiments exactly!
I too was fomerly an MTT player and still to this day I prefer them over all else. But now I've been playing cash game for 7years and it's been VERY difficult to get myself motivated to make a run at playing MTT's (even though I feel this is what I NEED to do if I'm to have enough success to make it financially worthwhile (financially worthwhile = equivalent to min. wage as I already have a small pension I live off of).
Typically for me, playing MTT's at the moment means dropping $200 to $300 on the day (on most days). Playing cash games could mean winning 4 or 5 buyins in an hour or four. (& even more buyins if I choose to play at lower stakes).
I also did a stretch of strictly SNG play as well... and also specialized in Multi-table SNG's for quite awhile too (those were my favorite.. too bad they barely exist today)

And final answer...
I would suggest to pick whichever you prefer to play because this is the one you'll be most willing to put in the time to study and get better at. (I still study MTT play while playing cash games, lol... sigh)

I was also choosing between these options, but in the end, I decided on cash games, and I'm very happy with it. It's a much faster way to win money and not drag out a poker session for a long time. But this is my opinion, and I'm not imposing it on you, I just prefer cash games, if it doesn't suit you, then choose the second option
