Splitting Pots

I have seen some pots split to 2 players with say for example,
each player has a J in their hand and 1 player has a 7 and the other a 2.The flop is J,10,A.The turn is a 4 and the river is a 8, they split the pot.Same scenerio only 1 player has a Q while the other has a 7 and the 1 with the Q wins entire pot.This is not true on all sites at all times. Whats the ruleing on splitting?

Because the Pair of jacks from each player is 2 cards, then you got a A, 10, and 8 for 5 cards that higher than the 7 of player one. The hand is you make the best of your 2 pocket cards and the 5 community cards.

In the first example, the best hand both players can make is JJAT8.

In the second example, one player can make JJAQT, while the other still makes JJAT8. Q is higher than T, and so wins the pot.

FWIW, if the river had have been another ten in the second example, the pot would've been split again: both players would've made JJTTA.
