In Romania, football (soccer) was always the number 1 sport and it still is, but not at the same level as quite a few other sports have become more popular/have attracted more investors nowadays... it is because for some (unknown) reason this sport was a bit 'targeted' by heavy regulations- mainly high taxes and/or other different legal problems(for example: FCSB, the former FC Steaua Bucharest- the nb 1 club in Romania and a previous UCL winner, lost their name/brand/history because the owner tried to save some money when he bought the club in 2003, there were no issues until 10+ years later when he didn't want to give 'free money' anymore to the previous state organization, the military, that can't even own a club in the 1st division...); fans don't go to the stadiums as much to support their local teams, other sponsors are tough to find and that made top teams unable to invest any money at all in improving their teams... this made it possible for new 'top teams' (usually for a short period of time) to appear- win a few titles and then 'disappear'... but if we talk about the best teams in Romania and the clubs with most fans/the teams seen as contenders each season, we have mainly 4 teams: FCSB, Rapid Bucharest, Dinamo Bucharest, CFR Cluj(the best team by far in the last 10-15 years...).
