Trouble looming between Titans, Chris Johnson

The Titans' exceptional running back, Chris Johnson, thinks he should be the highest paid offensive player in the NFL. While he was the 2009 AP Offensive Player of the Year, I have a hard time with the notion he should get paid more than Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. However, there is no denying he is a great player and could be the best running back in football. (It's either him or Adrian Peterson.)

Johnson was a late first round draft pick in 2008, and in his slot he received a contract worth a total of $12 million over 5 years. This season his base salary will be $550,000. I understand his point that he feels he is underpaid, but I also think he should honor his contract while he tries to negotiate a new deal. As a Texans fan, I am pleased to see all this turmoil, because it can only hurt the Titans. Johnson is considering holding out of training camp if he doesn't get a new deal. That is music to my ears.

I strongly doubt he'll be the highest paid player in the league, I also agree that he won't make more than peyton, brady bunch. In my opinion, I think AP is better than he is but I know he is a great player but whats up with NFL players wanting so much money i'll be the happiest man alive for just 100K a year which I think the min. payroll in the NFL is probably over quarter million. I think he's going to another team.

All players should honor the contracts they signed and then get more money after that one expires but things like this happen so often these days.

I would think that the Titans would restructure his contract to keep him happy. I definitely don't see him being the highest paid player in the NFL, but I can certainly see him wanting more money after the season he had. If I were making decisions for the Titans, I would offer him some big incentives for yardage, etc. and then talk about a new contract after next season.

He has definitely outplayed his contract, but the thing is, he's only been in the league 2 years and still has a long way to go on his rookie deal. On top of that, he's a small-framed running back who probably won't have a long career. And if that's not enough, there is likely to be a lockout by the owners next year. Taken together, I don't think it would make sense for the Titans to redo his contract, which means this could get very ugly.
