6 or 9 player tables

I prefer 9 handed tables as there is a better chance of having a bad player at the table with 8 opponents instead of only 5. I would prefer larger tables if they had them. The fewer players at the table the more you need to wider your range pre flop and call or raise wider post flop.

Definitely have to open it up the range a little more and defend the blinds more often on six player tables. Otherwise, the blinds just eat up your stack waiting.

For starters I’d play 6 player sit n gos , simple and short for beginners that are farting off poker

I find it rather interesting, that 6-max has largely taken over online cash game poker, but online tournament players still seem to hang on to the more traditional 9-max or sometimes 8-max, which is just a small variation from 9-max. Sure poker sites offer 6-max tournaments, but these are not the most popular or plentiful.

Personally I actually think, the 6-max format has some great advantages for tournament play. A 6-max table play more hands per hour, and since you can get involved more, you get far more chances to actually play, before the blinds go up. In a 9-max tournament, sometimes you have been involved in like 3-4 hands, when you are already sitting on a push or fold stack.

For the same reason stacks tend to remain deeper in a 6-max tournament, which also leave more room to play and use skill edges. It is essentially the same as a slower structure without increasing the amount of time, which the tournament takes, and I personally find that brilliant. I do wish though, that the final table would start, when there are 9 players left. At that point it becomes awkward in my opinion, that the remaining players are still distributed on two tables.

I think that in smaller tables you need to play more agressive and more hands than in 9 player tables. The range of cards that you play in 6 player tables is wider... is that right?

It seems to me to be easier. The game there is more tight, that is, there are only strong hands. It is worth noting that 6-max tables are becoming increasingly popular for a number of reasons. If you do not have problems with playing on long tables, then their growth will be much smaller, and you will have to relearn under short tables. Of course, this is not very nice. 9-max, and then start learning 6-max.
Since all ranges - calls, 3-bets, blind protection - are much wider than in the 9-max, you play more hands against your opponents. So, if you play better in every situation, you earn more. It is precisely because of the wider ranges and, therefore, the greater number of controversial situations that distinguish strong players from medium and weak ones, in the 6-max you can earn more than in the 9-max. But to do this, of course, is very difficult. You will have to learn to understand all these controversial issues.

Personally I prefer 9-man tables but I think so much of it is what you’re used to and I’ve played many millions more hands at full ring tables

Jokes apart, to me any shape and size will work as long as I am having fun.
Poker is a game to be played to feel relaxed.

I personalty like 9 or full tables games. The good thing about 6 that i do like is that its a faster game than a full ring game.

In MTTs I prefer 9-handed tables as I like to take my time in these and observe more.
But in STTs I prefer the 6-handed version and even turbo ones. I am more used to them meanwhile, although I started with 9-handed STTs. And in these 6-handed turbos you really have to open up your range and play more cards.

Less luck and more patience at the 9 player tables, that's for me.

6 handed games play more aggressively and, by nature, 6max players generally have more volatile swings. It's not the place to go to escape variance and downswings....
