I agree with Tracid on this.

I would say I prefer to play from a tournament from the start and settle into the table/game but it is not always convenient, so I will late register. The interesting thing is I have yet to conclude which works better - so it's a wash to date.

I think late regging is optimal for me, since the trade off of time is so important right now. I have a young family and cannot play poker for hours. I typically late reg a few MTTs while laying with the kids at night time and if i get deep in 1 or 2 I've got my nighttime entertainment. :)

Nice! Prioritizing family life- a good balance sounds idyllic!

So far 60% have replied, that they register from hand one, but I can not remember the last time, I played a tournament, where 60% of the field was there from hand one. Sometimes its as little as 20% of the field or even less. So either the people responding are not representative, or they are not completely honest in their answers. Maybe a lot of people think, its ideal to register from hand one, but they often end up registrering late anyway.

It depends on the game. There are some games you can register close to the end of late registration and be in the money after a few minutes. Other games you'll be in trouble with a short stack and a long way to go.

By registering late you avoid the early all in players but most likely will be up against big stacks so you have to hope you get dealt something good.

Perhaps this is due to correlation. People who are on poker message boards are more likely to be students of the game. This may lead to a skewed data set, toward the early registration trend. :)

It depends on the game I want to play . Usually I am satisfied with 40 buyins , or even 50 , with more I might fall victim to a bad beat ......

How late I'm willing to reg varies based on how much increased variance I'm okay with (generally willing to reg with fewer blinds the lower the buyin is relative to my average) but I'd always prefer to be in from the very start to give myself every opportunity to build a huge stack :)

This is exactly how I feel regarding my original question.

Thanks!

Which is why I'm playing relatively cheap games, because the compromise of time makes it more valuable to me to reg as late as possible.

I like to enter late reg so long as there’s enough room to play with the blinds in relation to the starting stack. Also I will look at the average stack and if it’s over 50% of the starting stack I probably look elsewhere for a game. Eg 50,000 starting stack I won’t play if the average is above 75,000.

Can’t be doing with early entry unless it’s a particular game I want to play.

I don’t have much time for playing, and love to play tournaments, so late- late registration suits me, maybe around 20BB

Awesome and I totally understand--especially now that I have two young kids! :)

Yeah, bounties are definitely worth buying in as early as possible.

I always try to register at the beginning of the tournament! Firstly, because I like to play with a more complete stack, and secondly, at the beginning of the tournament there are a lot of weak players!

The earliest the better. Too much value at the beginning. Also big love for the game means bigger need for playing time.
