Can you share a little bit about satellite tickets? I tried but lost a lot. Probability is not yet on my side

These are usually turbo tournaments, so there's no use expecting premium cards. Since everyone is under pressure to get the ticket, we can force a lot more folds. If you have an A Bom blocking, in the 20bb phase you will already go all-in and most of the time the players will drop out. That way, you'll keep your stack healthy to get the tickets. Just don't be fooled by average pairs and playing out of position, there's the biggest hole.

Satellite tickets can be tricky, so you’re definitely not alone in feeling that way. Even though the buy-ins are small, variance hits really hard because only a few spots get paid, and often it’s all-or-nothing. A lot of good players lose many satellites before they finally convert one into a ticket, so results in the short term don’t say much.

One thing that helped me was changing my mindset and strategy compared to regular tournaments. In satellites, survival and stack preservation matter more than accumulating chips early. You don’t need to win all the chips, just enough to secure a seat. I’m curious how others here approach satellites differently and what adjustments worked best for them.

Winning post! ^

Only thing I can add is to check out Dara O'Kearney's book(s). He has one that is specific to satellite play.

Satellite tickets are a way to qualify for major poker tournaments, like the EPT, for a minimal price. PokerStars has a multi-tiered Power Path system, starting from $0.50, where you can win packages. If you look in the satellite lobby, it says you can't unregister and then re-register if you win a seat, so I'm pretty sure the client doesn't have a way to track satellite wins. It's just set to automatically participate when you win a seat.

In satellites, pay attention to the number of available seats and your position at the table so you don't lose due to the blinds. It's the only place where you can fold AA because you're already guaranteed a spot.

Satellites play very differently from normal MTTs.

It’s not about chips — it’s about survival and winning a ticket.
You should play tight early, avoid big risks, and not chase marginal spots.
Near the end, adjust to ICM — sometimes folding strong hands is correct if you’re close to a seat.

Most players lose by playing too aggressively — patience is the key in satellites.

Чи можете ви трохи розповісти про квитки на сателіт? Я спробував, але багато програв. Ймовірність поки що не на моєму боці.
If you are a beginner and do not have enough experience to play in the tournament you want to go through, this is no longer a profitable action on your part. If you simply do not have a bankroll at the moment to participate in this tournament, then you need to understand what kind of tournaments it is. You need to look at the structure, it is almost always turbo or hyperturbo, and calculate correctly to go further, since there is no difference what place you occupy.

I can say from my own experience that satellites are very different from regular tournaments. When I first started playing them, I lost a lot and thought I was just unlucky.
I treated them like regular MTTs: I played aggressively, tried to build my stack, and put pressure on my opponents. But over time, I realized that this is often a mistake in satellites.
I also understood that it’s not only about bad luck. Yes, variance exists, but in satellites, mistakes are very costly. Even a small wrong decision can cost me a ticket.
In the end, I decided this for myself: if I play a satellite like a regular tournament, I lose. If I play it as a task to survive and advance, my results get better.

I used to struggle with satellites too until I realized how important ICM pressure is in them. When the field gets close to the number of tickets, big stacks can bully medium stacks because those players don’t want to risk elimination. But if you’re a medium stack, you actually need to tighten up a lot. Many players make the mistake of calling too wide when their whole tournament life is on the line. Sometimes the best move is simply folding your way to the ticket. Only in satellites is normal and completely acceptable to fold AA or KK sometimes.

Satellites are very different from normal tournaments because the goal isn’t to win chips, but to survive until you get a ticket. One common mistake is playing too many hands early. It’s usually better to play tight and avoid unnecessary risks. When stacks get shorter, it becomes more about push/fold and choosing good spots to steal blinds. Also, you don’t need a big stack — you just need enough chips to stay above the cutoff for a ticket.

Patience and discipline are much more important than aggression in satellites.
